:24: Oh come on, this administration hasn't run out of money for anything else yet! And this is supposed to be his top priority!

Obama Plans Guantanamo Close, US Trials
November 10, 2008

President-elect Obama's advisers are crafting plans to close the Guantanamo Bay prison and prosecute terrorism suspects in the U.S., a plan the Bush administration said Monday was easier said than done.

Well duh. They lost that fight the second they made it about Gitmo and not the underlying issue, namely indefinite detention.

Gitmo is actually a pretty damn good place to keep a lot of people that are very likely, very dangerous with very dangerous friends still on the loose. Attempting to close the prison there, move those guys to the mainland and then continue the indefinite detention is a non-starter...

The real issue is and always had been the intention to hold people indefinitely without any semblance of a trial, whether it be a regular court (which I don't think is feasible) a military tribunal or whatever...

the Obama administration is struggling to come up with the money to replace the Guantánamo Bay prison.

replace? this is a far cry from stating he wanted to shut the place down. in fact replacing is not even close to shutting something down.

CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN!

i cant believe everyone who voted for him bought into his bullshit. i bet they really thought he represented change and hope. lolololol fucking dopes.

This thing with Gitmo is all about perception. The morons .... Obama and his administration... Think that closing Gitmo will make us look better thru out the world. Only one small problem. You have the AG stating not to worry that guys like KSH will never be freed.

How is it the press is not picking up on this stupidity.????

Why on earth should we bring them to the states??? There is only one reason and that is to change the perception of how we look and frankly we should not care because those who hate us aint gonna give a damn what we do. They will never be satisfied.

Why are we treating them as anything less than those tried during the Nuremburg days?

And is there any coincidence that the admin selected Illinois?

I'd have to find it but I read an article last week detailing exactly where we screwed up where we can't do that. It has to do with the fact that we never actually had a legal declaration of war which limits what we're able to do under the existing legal framework and pushes these guys off into a legal gray area. :thumbdown

makes sense

Thanks for the explanation

I think we have a new area of concern with enemy combatants. Something Geneva never probably envisioned

Yeh. Geneva never envisioned Congress being such pussies they'd let the president act like a king. We were all so busy trying not to commit ourselves that now we have nothing to stand on.

Had we adhered to the constitution we wouldn't have this problem. *please cut & paste this statement in all political threads*

That and Geneva never envisioned what amounts to a private army going off to war against a nation state.
