Do you think Barack Obama's grandfather (Kenyan Muslim) would mind that his son (Barack) converted to Christianity?

My mistake.....thought this area was about Philosophy and Debate.....

however point taken....maybe the topic should be rephrased then

Muslims do NOT believe that Jesus Christ was crucified on the cross.......How would "you" feel if your son\daughter converted to a religion other than "your" own?

As long as they didn't try and push their views on others or use it as an excuse to hate people irrationally, I would have no problem. What Obama and his grandfather feel about it is entirely up to them as far as I'm concerned though and none of anyones business.

That's a really good topic.

I have no religion but for the purposes of this, we'll go with the (incorrect) assumption that atheism is a religion. My feelings would depend upon their reasoning for joining a religion. If they'd carefully thought about it, questioned everything using proper logic and still came to the conclusion they believed the religion, then good for them. If they'd been duped into circular logic and false unprovable claims, i'd be disappointed because I raised them better than that. Regardless, I'd support them happily and unconditionally.

NOW we have something...

It'd be tough to accept, but I would. I would feel that I failed a little as a parent because I didn't bestow my beliefs on him or her, but in another way I'd be proud that I raised a free thinker who comes by their convictions as a result of who they are as individuals and what they've learned, not where they happen to be from and what they've been told.

It'd be tough...

If son or daughter wanted to believe in god and some sort of religion I wouldn't stop them. Although I would raise them in a god-free house hold.

I can answer this easily. I made sure that my daughter attended Religious Education at school & also as a member of our local church youth group. I wanted her to learn about JC & his minions, I also made sure that she was aware that there are a great number of other religious beiefs, without going into detail. I also made sure that she was aware of my beliefs.

For a long while she chose to believe in God, & I was fine with it, now she has chosen not to believe & I am fine with it.

Children are yours to raise & educate, not to control.

Converting would mean that he was once Muslim. He wasn't, he was raised Christian. So what's the real question here?

Many people are very protective of there chosen religion and are offended when family members stray. I was raised Presbyterian, my wife, Catholic and when I told my Dad we were raising our son as Catholic, he told me it was like having a death in the family...

Note, neither me nor my wife have been active church goers for at least a decade.

My Uncle was Jewish and is now a practicing Christian and my family still loves him just as much.. We were shocked but we don't mind..

I think it's a bit wrong to shun someone just because of their religion.. Sure they can be a little bit upset, but you can't have a grudge forever!

Rejecting a family member because of their religion is forcing your views on them as far as I'm concerned. You're trying to take away their freedom to chose their religion for themself. Jehovahs Witnesses are great at doing this. They claim they dont force people to be in their religion and they are free to leave any time they want but that is just a half truth. If you've been brought up in it and leave, all your friends who you've grown up with (remember, they dont like you having friends who are non JWs) will stop talking to you and they will bully your family and try and force them not to talk to you too. Therefore, theirs claims are untrue.
