I'm probably naive in these areas. why why knowledge of what nuclear fallout can do to the earth would anyone think running nuclear power plants or using nuclear bombs would be a good thing?

You're running 2 trains of thought that almost, but don't quite, run parralel.

The whole point of nuclear weapons are that they are highly destructive. thats why people would use them, its a hell of a threat. But that is generally a fusion reaction.

As a form of energy, its incredibly efficient, despite the process to acquire nuclear fission being incredibly energy consuming.

There's the why, the ethical questions that they arise afterwards are a different kettle of fish. And people don't always do what is ethical.

99% of the issue with Nuclear waste is that no one wants it in their back yard. And nobody in the state of Nevada, where the U.S. government wants to put our waste, wants it either. If they could come up with a means of recycling spent rods, that could be a viable option. In the mean time, having piles of radioactive drums with 1000 year half lifes (or whatever it is), sitting around rusting down by the river, turns thinking people off.
