I'm not too savvy with computers, so I don't know what the hell is going on or how to fix this! I believe the laptop I have is an HP Pavillion DV4. The sound was working perfectly fine at about 6am this morning, and around 10am it just stopped working. I tried troubleshooting and no solutions or anything came up. I did a quick google search and it seems this is a common error, but I can't seem to find teh solution to help me out at all. I tried calling Microsoft since I run Windows, they told me to call HP. I call HP, and after getting hung up on three times, and then getting a guy who spoke almost no English whatsoever, I was told that my warranty has run out, and although they know exactly what is wrong and how to help me fix it, they cannot give me the answer unless I pay for a $15 per month maintenance plan, and call me old-fashioned or cheap, but I'm not gonna pay $15 to have a guy give me the answer. I'm not sure what exactly my operating system is, because in my control panel, it says I run Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, but if I go to the BIOS menu on start up, it says I run Windows Vista, and the sticker on my laptop says Windows Vista as well, so I don't know what to go with. I know very little about what goes on with laptops, so if anybody could help solve this and walk me through how to resolve it, I'd be greatly appreciated and I'll obviously give some positive rep to everybody involved in helping me figure this out. Sorry in advance for not posting this in any sub forums, I wasn't exactly sure if it needed to go in hardwar or software. If needed, feel free to move the thread to the proper location.

Any ideas guys?

If you right click next to where the time is displayed in the lower right corner it will bring up a submenu. Look for the one that looks like a speaker. That is your volume control and slide it all the way up. Sometimes sites manipulate that as my wife has that problem at times.

Don't worry about the bios or stickers, if windows properties says you are running 7, you are running 7.

Could be an issue with drivers. Check your device manager first. (Start > Right click "Computer" > Properties > Device Manager) and look at the Sound, Video Controllers and System Devices for any errors (will show up as a yellow exclamation mark in the list)

Repped both of you. Zorak, it turns out you were right about both things. I contacted Microsoft(Since they are the people who do Windows). The operator told me that I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium. The reason for the sticker and the BIOS menu stating otherwise is that more than likely, the previous owner of my laptop may have updated the OS to Windows 7 from Vista, so the sticker says Vista, and the BIOS just hasn't changed the name. But I'm definitely running 7.

The operator ended up doing a remote control over my computer, it turns out something was wrong with some kind of driver. He just installed IDT Audio Driver and it fixed it right away. Thanks for the help guys!
