In my younger days I coulda helped you out with the virgin thing. Then you wouldn't have to worry about testing your ability to get close to them. Now I'm like.... pfft... go see what you can do.

probably,then i'd have got out of there,by what i know of bears they come out of hibernation to breed then fatten up for the next hibernation,and man is definately on the menu

Man really isn't on the menu because they won't attack just for the heck of it. They prefer to be left alone and if you do that there's a good chance they will do likewise especially if they have young.... which you may not see because they could be off to the side somewhere. That thought did cross my mind more than once that day. They also don't take to kindly to being scared so that's why it's a good idea to make a lot of noise when you're hiking through any areas where they can be. I've done that more times than I care to mention. Some people wear bells on themselves. :thumbup
