Dunno if this is the best place to put this, but something on the Grauniad today really caught my attention, and royally pissed me off at the same time.

I've changed my mind about men | Julie Bindel | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk

Basically the gist is this columnist openly admits she is a "man hater," and has been most of her life, but recently she's decided that men are ok. No apology or anything.

Do you think it's right for a columnist for a serious newspaper like the Guardian to openly express some bigoted views like hating the entire of the opposite sex? And not even attempting to make it seem like a joke?

Let rip guys.

No longer a man hater? Hmm, maybe she got laid.

Anyway, after reading a few of her articles, I've pretty much realized that she is a sexist bigot. Props to the Guardian for publishing her rubbish, I wonder if a man would get away with saying equally bigoted language against women in the Guardian, too?

Because she's a lezzer she gets a lot more space to offend on the Guardian I think. There have been articles pulled for lesser offences than sexism like that - there was one written by an ex-stripper last year, wherein she was seriously berating overweight people that got pulled after about 3 hours, in which time it had nearly 1,000 comments, mostly all telling the columnist to fuck off...

Don't think a man could ever get away with that kind of thing though.

Personally I think if you've got bigoted views, best keep them to yourself. Especially if you're a columnist for a leading international newspaper.

Whether or not her views are bigoted, she has the freedom to express them. That's what columnists do, express their opinions.

They also have a responsibility to the people that read the paper. They have power, and that requires restraint and consideration.

Sheep need a calm steady controller, people do not.

You're right, people don't need to be controlled. But people need to exercise control. This is a very important part of being a good citizen, let alone being a good journalist.

Spouting bigoted opinions is never a good thing, freedom or not.

If she said this about gay men, it'd be considered hate speech. But because she says it about all men, it's ok? Ridiculous.

She's a Rush Limbaugh, a columist. She shares opinion to stir shit up, that's her job and you are responding just like the plan calls for....

I didn't say a word about her. I was commenting on double-standards in society, I couldn't care less about her personal opinion. :dunno

:homo:

Personally I wish newspapers would stick to reporting news instead of promoting bull shit. I hate the way they are free to mislead people and stir up trouble but rarely get held responsible for the shit they whip up.

I might post my own column, since we're free to exercise free speech and what not.

"Why I hate lesbians, Nature's Mistake."

The next one is

"I've changed my mind about lesbians. They're not all to blame for the declining birthrate."

:D

You want double standards of sexism just turn on the TV (British). Many adverts blatantly run with the idea that men are complete idiots. I absolutely hate it.

The Daily Mail used to run with a lot of man hating crap in its back section (where they can stick it). Articles that would basically say; 'I once dated three men; they are all crap'. I will browse through tomorrow and see if they still do their fem section.

That sounds like a bigoted view on your part. ;)

Since when do people have to apologise for having an opinion, or changing it?
