Do you remember the horror? One second of prime time Janet Jackson's breast during the Superbowl and little Billy and Suzie were scarred for life. 500,000 complaints lodged with the FCC against CBS. A $500k fine levied against CBS which is still in the courts. And the debate raged as to just what indecency is.
It's hard to believe how hung up the U.S. is regarding nudity. Have we improved (liberalized) since then or have become even more conservative? Certain elements of the country have certainly moved towards the dark, the dark ages that is.
Nipplegate was an accident. However, what I find amazing is the schism between public broadcast tv and cable. It's easy to find softcore porn on cable TV. I wonder why they keep public TV in such a straight jacket? It's hard to compete that way although there are signs now and then of somewhat liberalized views, showing a tush here and there, but my god never a nipple! I can verify there is a demand for nudity. I demand it. I guess the debate is, is this liberating or is it sinking into the moral abyss? Personally I like a healthy dose of nudity and sexual situations intertwined in my entertainment. Technology exists that can prevent children from seeing what parents deem as inappropriate material. So I think it's time to take public TV's straight jacket off.
