I believe many students everywhere are into the flesh trade to pay tuition fees, buy branded goods etc. More common is mistresses.
(AP) WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) - A New Zealand teenager who says she auctioned her virginity online for $32,000 to raise tuition money did not break any laws but it might be risky for her to follow through on the deal, police warned Wednesday.

The anonymous 19-year-old student offered her virginity to the highest bidder on the Web site www.ineed.co.nz under the name "Unigirl," saying she would use the money to pay for her tuition. She said in a post that more than 30,000 people had viewed her ad and more than 1,200 had made bids before she accepted an offer of more than New Zealand dollars 45,000 ($32,000).

everything is a SVU episode. whoever is coming up with their plots needs to be fired. iraq war has been a hot topic for them in the past. even using characters based on those god hates fags idiots in an episode. they love making commentary on current events through the writing in the show. it almost makes me not want to watch.

The New Zealand government has a student loan scheme, she can get her education for practically free until after she graduates and gets a high paying job. At that point she'd have to pay the money back through the taxation system.

I don't believe this practice is common at all throughout the West, tens of thousands of students in countries like New Zealand and Australia move on from secondary to tertiary education every year and this kind of practice almost never happens. It's just the sensationalist and novelty value of the article that attracts the news media.
