New Puppy question

Cool, haha .. but yeah, that is probably your culprit then .. puppies will gorge themselves on food sometimes (well, some dogs never outgrow that actually .. which is where the issue of bloat comes from) .. and of course .. then it comes right back out the other end LOL.

The effects of the wormer should have already worn off by now if it's been a couple of days .. it'll usually clean them out real good .. and it's over with and back to "normal" lol ;).
 
My brother has 3 German Shepards and they were all very easy to train. Bear, the puppy, is less than a year old and has been shaking hands for months...my nephew taught him how. ;)

SRC gave very good advice. Repetition is the best teacher w/ dogs, IMO. Shadow learns really quickly by repetition. For instance, we had a problem w/ her wanting to come out the front driver's side when she rode in the car instead of waiting for us to let her out the back door. We started simple enough by one of us staying in the car w/ her while the other went and let her out of the back door. Then we went to opening the door before we got out. Now she will sit in the back seat by herself and wait patiently for us to come let her out. She's such a good girl!!! :)

lol well if he's full of food .. it'll take a little bit for all of it to come out .. bless his heart LOL.

I suggest not giving him any food until tommorrow night .. and taking him out at least once and hour .. might work all that food out of him lol.
 
My dogs will randomly shit in the crate... but its only when they are in there longer than they can hold... which isnt often... its still 1000000 times better than chasing poopy dogs all over the house-- at least its contained to one spot :)
 
I know that when I crated my dog, it was only when we needed to step out or at night. It's never good to discipline a dog by putting them in the crate. I know as my dog got a little older, we would just leave the crate door open and she would walk in and go to sleep. She loved her crate since we never let it be associated with punishment.

And as far as SRC's advice column above... I would say 100% spot on. training a dog is very easy, you just need to be very consistent and repetitious like she said, which is very hard for most people with their busy lives. I never had any problems training any of my dogs.

Well, puppies do really need to eat several times a day (3 times is optimal .. at 10 weeks though .. 2 times is plenty enough) so if you feed the puppy in the morning and then again at night .. you really shouldn't have any problems .. just make sure to take up whatever the big dogs don't finish eating, after they are done ;).

Just a side note: Techincally speaking, all dogs should be eating twice a day. You just split up their daily portion (not 2 whole portions) into 2 halves (most dogs don't need to eat a bunch of dry food at one time .. it's not really good for them, especially the deep chested breeds. That can = bloat, which is very bad) .. this type feeding schedule keeps them from being hungry all day and keeps them from rumaging around while you are gone (if you don't crate them while out of the house).
 
Oh, I also suggest a large breed formula dog food for him, since he is definately going to be a large dog.

Large breed dog food (puppy and adult) contains lower amounts of protein .. which is used to keep them from growing too much too quickly. Growing too quickly can cause severe joint problems in large breed dogs like GSD and doberman (to name a couple, there are plenty more it affects) later in their life. Which means, it can help contribute to hip/elbow displasia if they are prone to it (which GSD's and Dobie's are because of their bone structure).

Walmart has an Old Roy brand Large Breed Puppy (and adult) that is pretty comparable to Eukanuba .. but cost 3 times less. You can also find low protein formulas at local Feed & Grain (co-op) stores where people buy horse feed.
 
Eukanuba and Iams are actually crap now...since Proctor & Gammil bought them out. This is a very informative article on how to pick the best dog food...I switched from Euk to Nature's Variety..it's about $40 a bag, but you feed your dog WAY less, because it has way less fillers, and they poop WAY less too. Maybe twice a day. The lady I buy it from swears on it, she has tons of dogs that are approaching 20 years old. (shes a breeder/shows dogs)
