I have acquired a Dell Dimension 9100 computer from work. I diagnosed the problem to be a bad motherboard. To replace the MoBo it will run $211
Now here's the question, do I fix or do I look for a new box?
I need to use this machine for business type work, ie Quickbook pro, office, accounting etc. So I don't need a gaming machine but a very reliable workhorse (exactly what the 9100 is)

Here are the specs for my 9100 and I added a 500GB Barracuda hard drive.

P4 and regular DDR memory?:thumbdown
945p chipset, meh.

If you end up spending money on it then try to get the next generation CPU, MOBO and memory.
You should be able to get a decent deal if you dont get bleeding edge tech especially if you opt for AMD instead of Intel.

My problem right now is that I don't have the extra cash to blow on a system. I have several cases I can use for new guts, but for a new mobo, processor, memory and video is going to run at least $500-$600. When I can have a proven, sound business machine for $200
Like I said, I only need to run XP Pro, and some business software

Fix a motherboard? mmmmmm, depends if you can replace the faulty component with a spare part....which I seriously doubt it

So I go for replacing mobo with the exact type

Tim, that depends on the problem with the Mobo..

I recently had someone give me an old computer with Mobo problems. It had a great Video Card so I scavenged it from the system and it almost blew mo complete system..

Mobo problems can compromise everything from Video Cards, Sound Cards, RAM ( DDR ), the CPU and USB devices from bad protection feedback..

I would seriously consider every aspects of this old system before investing cash into it..
