So in the next 6-8 months I want to get a new computer. I think I want a PC because I already own a mac...and it's nice to have one of each for compatibility issues. We will probably build it but it's been a while so I am not sure what I want to put in it. I know I want a kick ass video card, and a SATA drive so I will need a mobo that can support that. And tonssss of RAM. I am looking to put about $1500 or so into it. I have a monitor already, so I just need the innards basically. So insert your product suggestions here :D

Necessary information needed before continuance:

1) Display - What kind of display? LCD/CRT? Size? Age? Manufactuer/Model?
2) More importantly, what do you plan on doing with the computer? If everything you do is capable of being done on your Mac, why dump $1500 on a system that will only provide slight benefits?

Of course, I am just asking questions; I intend no implications of intent, nor any other possibility.

I would put the money in a savings account, maybe for the little one's college expenditures later on, or maybe a rainy day fund. My opinion, but if you would like to proceed with building the computer, I will be more than happy to provide suggestions for your consideration. :)

Well I was just about to say buy a Mac if you can afford it. Otherwise I guess you'd have to settle for second best. It's good for games tho.

As for recommendations re PC, can't give you shit other than to say....invest in a good Anti-Virus software and other protection and maintenance software....and don't forget to update.

Take a look at this:

I like Thermaltake cases myself. I have a Tsunami

I definitely agree with an Asus Motherboard, but probably go with an Athlon Processor. I have NVIDIA myself, although not that high end of a card as the above system because I don't do gaming.

As for the hard drives, consider a couple of WD 150 Gig Raptors running in RAID 0 for optimum speed. Just make sure you keep it backed up.

I installed a water cooling system in my computer because I bought the Pentium D Dual Core when it first came out and the thing ran too hot--they've since improved the heat issues, but water cooling is great because you can keep a much quieter computer. I installed a Swift Tech system in Mine. Below is a review of 7 systems at Tom's Hardware--I linke to the conclusion page.

Conclusion - Tom's Hardware : 7 Hot New Water Cooling Systems Tested

Good price for all that.

Maybe double the RAM if you want to use Vista.

I like a challenge:

Case: SILVERSTONE Kublai Series KL01B Black ATX Mid Tower
Power Supply: OCZ GameXStream 700W ATX12V
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX All Solid Capacitors
Processor: Intel Q9300 Yorkfield 2.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
Memory: G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit
Graphics: BFG Tech GeForce 8800GTS (G92) 512MB 256-bit GDDR3
Storage: Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB SATA 3.0Gb/s
Optical: SAMSUNG Black 20X DVD Burner

Now, the price, not including shipping, handling or taxes, is $1363.89. Included: 2x the memory (total of 8GB - motherboard maximum), as well as two each of the hard drive and the dvd-burner.

If you were to get the essentials (cut out the doubling of some of the items), it would be..$1131.92 (without s/h/t).

The above list also assumes *you (or someone you know)* will be building it; it is not assembled before shipping. Newegg is quite a company, if you let them know the first instance of something wrong, they most likely will RMA (return materials authorization) the particular product, and get you another with little (s/h) or no cost extra. Newegg rocks! :thumbup

That power supply will have to be upgraded, there is no way a 420w will provide enough.

water cooling is NOT worth the trouble...it's only really useful if you are overclocking, and that is something I will never do...my husband had a WC system for a while and overclocking just doesn't work well with gaming...

yeah but I've been there done that...we didn't like it much, it was too expensive for what you get and a bitch to set up. I'll wait until it evolves more before I try it again
