We had what turned out to be a stressful situation when we bought a house and then had to sell our old house, but I can't say I remember as being told that the bank account couldn't be touched.

I agree....I don't understand how they can tell you that you can't access your own money, that's craziness.

That said, DO NOT be stupid and get an adjustable rate loan.

Also, you should have about 30k in the bank to put down as a down payment on a 150k home. If you don't, you should review your finances.
