Not being funny or anything but things like that make me cringe. It just seems like a big put on act to make religion "cool" and sell it. If you're only going to join a religion because you like their image, then it seems pretty pointless going to church at all.

I was just talking about these hipster church people in general. It just seems in bad taste selling religion through trying to look cool, if the religion was so great, surely it would sell itself on its ideaologies.

That isn't what they are trying to do. Just because someone calls him a hipster evangelist doesn't mean the label sticks. He is a very loving guy, great heart - ;)

I'm sure he is and if that really is what he is like, fair enough. I just find a lot of these hipster evangelists are just appearing to put on some image to appeal to the yoof audience and that makes me cringe. It also detracts from what their message is actually about.

peter it's not about that. I think a lot of people in their 20s feel abandoned by their churches because of the lack of connection between their generation and the one running the churches. I got my lip pierced when I was 18 and no longer allowed in the church by my father because of the whole "image" thing--he was the pastor so to him it was important for his family to look presentable as good little christians. I think that might be a lot of what really screwed me up, just the expectations on me to be perfect...I tried for a long time and then i just gave up...needless to say with a lot of the things i did i wouldnt dare show my face at his church again. I need a fresh start, but not in a place where people woudl place judgement on me for the things i have done. I know churches SAY that they are a place you can come and not be judged...but everytime I've tried i feel it..their eyes burn through me and it's like being placed under a microscope...there are whispers, and cliques...i just dont like that. I think Jay's church is a nice fresh approach and a place where people like me could go and feel accepted. I know you aren't religious Peter and that is completely your prerogative, but try to understand from a person in my situation's perspective, who doesn't jsut want to turn their back on their faith altogether.

That is exactly how I feel about religion Clare. If a church is like that, imo it is about religion and not relationship with Christ. It is about religion/deeds and not about faith and learning how to walk with the Lord and see and love people the way he sees and loves people. Churches have become so legalistic, just like they were when Christ came. He said no this is not how it is to be and people didn't listen. And they still don't now.

You'd love my church. No doctrine, just the Bible. A balance of law and grace. We are all about relationship, learning to think like Jesus, being servants to one another, not judging, but lovingly guiding one another to walk under the umbrella of God's provision and love. I'm blessed to have found such a home.
