VALDOSTA — Lowndes County Sheriff’s deputies found Troy Wade, 34, of Naylor bleeding profusely from wounds self-inflicted with a chainsaw in his truck at 4:45 a.m. Monday following an all night hunt after a Valdosta couple reported he attacked them in their home Sunday evening.
According to Det. Bryce Whitener, Sabine Carter and her fiance, Douglas Gross were attacked by the knife-wielding assailant in their home and remain hospitalized following treatment at South Georgia Medical Center.
Whitener said after Carter was cut on the neck, she and her 10-year old daughter were able to run out of the house to a neighbor to call 911. Whitener said
Gross was injured in the shoulder with the same knife, but was able to wrestle the weapon from the man whom they identified as Troy Wade, a former co-worker.
Wade escaped from the couple’s residence in his vehicle, according to officers, who went searching for him at his home in Naylor.
Capt. David Arnold said upon arrival at the home on Hotchkiss Road, they found the house on fire, with smoke coming out from around the doors.
The fire department was called to the scene, and the fire “smothered itself out. There was extensive smoke damage, but the fire damage was confined to one bedroom.”
Arnold said the fire’s origins were unknown but suspicious, and Wade was not in the home when officers arrived.
Sheriff’s deputies searched for him through the night, and located his vehicle parked in the Naylor area at 4:45 a.m. After running his tags to confirm his identity, officers approached the vehicle to find Wade had injured himself in both thighs with a chain saw, suffering a large loss of blood.
“He told officers that he was trying to commit suicide,” said Arnold, who said Wade’s injuries were serious and he is under guard while being treated at SGMC.
Lt. Wanda Edwards said Wade was charged Monday with two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of possession of a knife during the commission of a crime, and one count of cruelty to children in the third degree.
According to officers, Wade knew the couple from having worked with them previously, but had moved to Las Vegas last year.
Whitener said, “He was known to them, but the attack was unprovoked,” adding that they have no motive for the assault.
