my summer of photography has started early this year

its a bee fly,part of the Bombyliidae family.....now before anyone points out the spear on its head,thats its feeding tube because its a nectar eater,its defence is that it looks like a bee

and i got stung by nettles and scratched by thorns getting these

it varies,with this it was no more than 2 inches because of the size,but with say a dragonfly i'll start at about 6ft away so at least i get something,then i'll put the macro lens on to see how close i can get

its surprising how close you can get to insects if you show a little care and know the subject a bit,take dragonflies for instance,i know that at some time over the summer i'll be nearly touching the common darters,yet the brown hawkers are gone as soon as they see you

sort of,like a dandelion seedhead looks alien up close,or the inside of a flower..you'll just have to keep your eyes open because as they crop up i will be taking them

you could try what i did before i got this lens,a set of screw on filters that you put on your kit lens,pretty cheap and they give reasonable results

if your like me you'll not only be honing your skills with a camera,but you'll also do a little research on something you've never seen before,so its educational too....and lets face it,theres a whole ecosystem all around us that we just dont see
