Music appreciation?

Do you think that you have to play guitar (or any instrument really) to apperciate music? Personally, picking up guitar and bass made me appreciate music music more, but I have a friend who can't play a note on guitar and he appreicates music as much, if not more than me. Your thoughts?

Personally I don't think you have to play an instrument to appreciate music. I mean if you play an instrument you might pay more attention to the type of music that that instrument is in included.

Well I can't play an instrument or anything but I enjoy music.

Knowing the theory behind music definitely helps. You don't necessarily have to play an instrument, but if you can see chord progressions and fun patterns like that, it definitely helps. Or, you can just listen and enjoy without really knowing much

Musical knowledge definitely helps, but by no means is required to appreciate music

I think it can give a different kind of appreciation.

I love music; my entire life is soundtracked. I also can't play an instrument, but I do know the basic theory behind music and that sort of thing. I certainly appreciate music on several levels, and I don't think that playing an instrument offers "more" appreciation for music, so much as different.

I have a friend who lives and breathes music. He plays basically any instrument you can put in front of him, he writes music, performs music, and he definitely appreciates it. I wouldn't say "more", but he appreciates it on a different level than I do. He appreciates music as a listener and also as a musician. It's a different approach.

i appreciate music because i can't play it.. lol.. i have alot of respect for musical artists becuase theya re capable of creating such beutiful music and i cannot...

music is my life, and i appreciate greatly, ...then i learned how to play (key board and guitar) its still just a great, and i apprecitate that i can play even more..but no, i dont think you have to play an instrument to get full appreciation out of it
