It doesn't happen very often, but once in a while a movie beats the crap outta the book that it was based on.

Which movies do you think were better than the books on which they were based?

Top three for me:

1. 2001: A Space Odyssey - not a real surprise, considering the book was adapted from the screenplay

2. Fight Club - Just was.

3. Dr. Zhivago - That book was interminable. The movie didn't lose anything and kept all the good stuff.

I think that there a few where the films are better.

Blade Runner

Dr Strangelove

and 2001.

I never read Dr Strangelove, but Blade Runner was at least as good as the D.A.D.O.E.S., particularly in it's portrayal of the head droid (Roy?) But I still liked the book alot.

I should also mention that the book Fight Club is really good, just not quite as good as the movie IMO. I don't want to turn people off good books.

Gone With the Wind

The Shining

The Joy Luck Club

I'm sure I can think of more but those 3 come to mind right away. The books were all tomes -- too wordy for me.

I don't think it's quite that simple. I read quite a bit, and am always a little wary of movies based on literature, but I've still found some great movies.

Oh, no doubt. Lord of the rings is my favorite book ever. The film is also my favorite film ever. I still don't think the film could ever outdo the book though.

Yeah Lord ogf the Rings was a solid portrayal, but it's hard to beat the details of the books.

I tend to think that Sci-fi and fantasy more readily lend themselves to good movies. Moves based on literature rarely compete with the original. Dr Zhivago was the only case I could think of, and that was more of a personal opinion.

They do in recent years with the special effects available, they used to be really shit for the most part though. Before the likes of LOTRs came along the only fantasy I'd seen that wasn't crap was Willow.
