Motorola is teaming up with phonebloks to make modular smartphone a reality. This projects consists in various hardware modules that can be assembled to build a smartphone tailored to your needs.
You can sign up at http://www.dscout.com/ara to become a "scout" and give feedback about the developing process.

I'm excited about this, but I think there will be a downside (probably the price). What do you think?

I think the price would not matter if you can customize it at any point you wish. I mean if you want to go from iPhone 4 to iPhone 5, you need to spend at least 300 bucks even if you sell your iPhone 4. The cost of keeping up to date with mobile technology is ridiculous. Customizing it would make it much easier and less costly.
