BOSTON - A mother whose 13-year-old daughter nearly died from an infection caused by a bellybutton piercing was sentenced Thursday to 2½ years in prison for failing to seek medical attention for several weeks as the child grew sicker.
The girl wrote to the judge seeking leniency for Deborah Robinson, who was convicted this month of wantonly or recklessly permitting substantial bodily injury to a child under 14. She could have received five years.
“My mom is not in the least a criminal,” wrote the daughter, who is not being identified by The Associated Press to protect her privacy.
Prosecutors said Robinson watched as her daughter dropped from 115 pounds to 75 pounds and became incontinent and weak from an infection that began after she reinserted a belly ring she had removed months earlier. When EMTs arrived at the family’s Boston apartment on Aug. 3, 2005, the girl was emaciated, wearing an adult diaper and couldn’t get off the couch.

Ohh comeon I don't think that girls mother is solely responsible for the mishap..... That girl pierced her belly now how in this world is possible for anyone to check the belly button and that girl must have kept her mother unknown abt the fact that she has pierced her belly button. Which mom will allow her own teenage child to pierce their body parts ???? and nowadays kidz hardly listen to their parents.. and in this case that lady is a single mom ... Girl is aware that her mom is not solely responsible for the same so she requested the court to rethink on the judgement.

Both are equally responsible can't blame the mother just because she came to know the actual reason of her weakness at a later stage .... or rather we commenting or readin this small article it will be better if we also get to know what the mother has to say on this .. we have heard the girl now lets know the mom too.... And I don't know why people keep drilling their body parts...

If we want a conclusion we need to know the exact situation of what exactly happened. I agree that the lady ain't paid required attention but I also believe that there must be some other reason as well.........

The punishment was for watching her child get sicker and sicker and doing nothing about it. It deosn't matter the reason, the bottom line is she watched as her own child got so sick she couldn't eat or go to the bathroom on her own, and did nothing. The punisment was much to lienent. After all the child nearly died from an infection that was otherwise easily curable.

The woman should not only be receiving a prison sentence but should be declared an unfit mother and be prevented from having custody of any children in the future.

So if I'm clear on this, the mother failed to be there when her kid needed her, so the judge took her away for over 2 years. How can she be there for her now?

Seems to me that some education & parole + checking the condition of the kid would have been a better choice. Obviously the mother had been there for the past 13 years but was now going overboard with her punishment.

I'm not agreeing with the mothers stupid actions but sometimes we can make things worse trying to fix them.

When someone neglects their child to that degree, they don't deserve the privilege of being a parent. I find it extremely disturbing just how many people think it is their right to be a parent, regardless of whether they are capable of fulfilling that role.

I'm not agreeing with the mother's actions, just pondering that, based on the past 13 years, is taking this child away from her mother the best answer to this situation?

I agree that parents do not always deserve the privilege of looking after their kids as some of them are unable to do it.

The naval piercing really has nothing to do with it. If you let your child get THAT SICK and wait THAT LONG before doing something about it, you're a fuckup as a parent, plain and simple.

Totally true and my sediments exactly. Something was way fishy here. She put a diaper on her sick child, but wouldn't take her to see a doctor?
