I came across this post in another forum and I thought its worth to post it here.
At first glance, you might think that this thread belongs in the Binky forum, down in the Basement. But this is not about (XXXX), or any other political forum. It is about trolls in Congress, and the role of the American people as moderators to ban them from those hallowed halls.
I have followed the attempted Detroit airliner bombing with a lot of interest, and something occurred to me. To turn this incident into political fodder is not legislating, but trolling. I also find interesting the fact that a few individuals in the Republican party (Now known as the Party of Whiners), now out of power, are attempting to derail threads (dialogue on the floors of the House and Senate) with personal attacks, baiting, and trolling. Here are some examples:
1) The airline bombing incident statements in Congress.
2) The birther statements in Congress.
3) Statements about Death Panels in Congress.
There are many more examples, but I chose these 3 as representative of the kind of dialogue that is coming from the GOP these days. None of these are conducive towards the end of conducting the peoples' business, which is what we sent them to Congress for, but are acts of trolling.
This is not to say that trolling and personal attacks belong only to the Republican Party. When Bush was in power, a few Democrats in Congress crapped on his war record, compared him to Hitler, and in general, also acted like trolls. It wasn't right when they did it, and it is not right for Republicans to be doing it now. But pointing fingers at each other is not the solution, but is a childish form of trolling itself. The proper way is to moderate, at the ballot box.
There is a reason that (XXXX) is one of the best political forums on the interenet. Those who show an established pattern of being trolls are banned, and banned quickly. So how do trolls in Congress get banned? At the ballot box, by YOU, the moderators. This is not to say that those trollish Republicans should be replaced by Democrats, who I mostly detest. Just replace them with other Republicans who, instead of trolling, will do the jobs they were elected to perform.
In the end, it is up to the American people, as moderators, to keep the political forum known as Congress functioning properly, and to weed out the trolls. I hope to see that done in the next election. When that happens, the discussions in Congress will become just as good as the discussions at (XXXX). Or would you rather Congress become another troll pit, like so many that are out there now, where personal attacks, derailing of threads, and namecalling rule the day? It's up to you, the moderator.
