There's nothing wrong with having either of those pets.
It's very unfortunate the parents weren't paying attention to the child. It shouldn't have had it's finger in the water. I'd like to know what kind of piranha they have.

People childproof their homes when a baby come along....you put covers in recepticles so little fingers can't get into them, you put locks on cupboards, poisonous cleaners high and out of reach, etc. I think the removal of anything that can eat the finger of your child would fall into that category.

When the family Labrador takes a small chunk out of a kid because they did something dumb and unsupervised, it doesn't become news.

A guy at my job had a monkey in his house when he was a kid. If him and his sister ran around too much, the monkey would get mad and grab their hair.

Lots of people actually. The kind though is what you want to pay attention to. Not all piranha attack just because they smell flesh. I'm assuming it's a case where the fish thought maybe it was a worm...given it's a child and they have small fingers.

Heck I had a shark when I was a kid. No it's not a piranha, but you get the point.

The type of pets someone has does not make them a good or bad parent/person. It's how they raise those pets or how they teach their children to act around them. Like fingers, I've known since I was a kid to keep them out of fish tanks.

Anyways...to me this story doesn't mean the parents are bad just because of the pets they have.

I wouldn't have said piranhas counted as the sort of pet people should lose their kids over. You have to make a specific effort to engage with a piranha after all, they can't climb out and come after you. Get a more secure top for that piranha tank and it won't happen again.

With the millions of dangers in the world when it comes to child safety, you can't make sure everything is 100% secure.

We went to great lengths to make sure our home is child proof and I can tell you that there is no such thing as child proof.
And it's funny that the same type of people that bitch about the parents being bad in this type of situation are the same ones that pass around those "When we were kids" posts. Where it talks about drinking out of the hose, going outside until it was dark, riding a bike without a helmet, etc...

So which is it, child proof EVERYTHING or let them run around like kids did in the 70's
