A recent study shows that 36 million drivers would flunk their driving test if they took it today. 84% don't know what to do at a yellow light, and in the state driver test rankings, Arkansas ranks 27th.

It's been decades since many drivers took the test, and answered questions such as ‘What do you do at a yellow light?'.

"What do I do at a yellow light? I usually pause but then stroll through it," Claire Bennett of Little Rock said.

"Um, slow down," Driver Candace Young said.

"At a yellow light, I slow down and follow the law," Hunter Riley of Little Rock said.

The correct answer: to stop if it's safe. But how about this one:

How many feet ahead do you signal before you turn?

"Oh gosh, 10 feet," Young said.

"I turn about 30 feet," Riley said.

"Maybe 2 feet," Bennett said.

Actually, it's 100 feet, and the drivers we talked to were shocked when they realized how much they've forgotten since drivers ed.

"Honestly it's a little scary now that I think about it," Young said.

A realization that may prompt them to dust off the old Drivers Education book and brush up on the basics of getting behind the wheel.

So how would you score on a drivers license test? You can test your knowledge and take an Arkansas Drivers License Practice Test here.

Those questions are fucking ridiculous.
2. When you see a "Roadwork Ahead" sign you should:
a) brake and be prepared to stop
b) slow down and look for the roadwork
c) look for the roadwork
d) drive the posted speed limit and look for the roadwork
Incorrect.

I chose B, I guess roadwork doesn't lower your speed limits down there, up here there's a lower speed limit which means you have to slow down and look.

3. The measure to be used by the driver who is following a vehicle under good road conditions is:
a) 2-second following distance
b) 10 feet for every ten miles per hour you are traveling
c) 1 car length for every ten miles per hour you are traveling
d) 3-second following distance
Incorrect.

10 feet every 10 mph is what I was taught up here. You guys only allow for 3 seconds? Thats insanely close at 80 mph...

12. When is it legal to cross a double solid yellow line?

a) never
b) always
c) Only when you are making a left turn into a business or home driveway
Incorrect.

Can anyone say trick question? No one is going to go make a uturn to turn into a driveway... I thought this was about passing.

13. When you park your car uphill next to a curb, the right front wheel should be:

a) parallel to the curb with the brake set
b) turned to the left so the back of the wheel is against the curb
c) turned to the right with the wheel touching the curb
d) all of the above
Incorrect.

I chose C, and the answer is B. with the tire facing away from the curb, if it does start to roll, the curb should stop it either way... but theres less chance of a roll if you're turned to the right.

14. If your car begins to skid, you should:

a) take your foot off the accelerator and turn in the opposite direction of the skid
b) take your foot off the accelerator and turn in the direction of the skid
c) brake immediately and turn in the direction of the skid
d) brake immediately and turn in the opposite direction of the skid
Incorrect.
mad.gif

I chose A, the correct is C. Sorry, but if I'm skidding towards a giant ditch... I'm not going to turn into it.

18. Roads and highways are always most slippery when:

a) during a heavy downpour
b) the first rain after several dry weeks
c) after it has been raining for a few hours
Incorrect.
mad.gif

I chose A, which is also correct with B. Driving in Rain is no more safe than driving after the rain has stopped.

24. When driving in foggy road conditions, you should:

a) use your regular headlights only
b) turn on your high beams
c) use your low beams
Incorrect.
mad.gif

I chose A, and that's wrong... I don't know about you, but my regular headlights ARE MY lowbeams...

I missed 7/25.

I got a 21 of 25. Some of those answers are asinine. Two seconds behind traffic or three seconds behind traffic. Nitpicky crap. :)

Having given driving instruction for about 2 years several years ago I would have to say that the hardest thing to get across to pre test drivers is that little bad habits creep into their driving routine that can cause them to fail ,trying to get them to change bad habits like that can sometimes be a hopeless task.
Another thing it does is make you aware of all those little errors and faults other drivers have when you are beside them as a passenger.
