A professional tree trimmer in Loveland, CO died Wednesday afternoon after being pulled into a wood chipper. Supervisor George Meyers said the owner of the tree service and Hernandez were clearing land behind the home. The owner was up in a tree chopping off limbs and dropping them to Hernandez below, who was putting them into a commercial wood chipper.
When the owner heard the wood chipper stop operating, he climbed down to investigate. He found a gruesome scene – one of Hernandez's hands was sticking out of the machine. "His whole body got stuck in the machine," Meyers said. Officials say there was some indication that Hernandez went in feet first, but that could not be confirmed.
A chipper running at full speed could chip a 20-inch-wide, 8-inch-long log in about 10 or 15 seconds. Wood chippers can range in size, but most tree services use ones that are about 6 feet wide, about the width of a pickup truck bed.
This comes in the wake of recent avian influenza outbreaks, where there has been controversy about the disposal of infected birds. You guessed it, many of them are being thrown into wood chippers, apparently it's faster than the usual method of stretching their necks or suffocating them.
