A Garland County man under hospice care is charged with first-degree murder for allegedly bludgeoning his wife to death with a garden tool.
Dennis Mitchell Howald, 64, is accused of killing his 57-year-old wife at their home. The woman's name has not been released because her relatives had not been reached with news of her death.
Garland County sheriff's Lt. Rodney Neighbors says Howald is suffering from a terminal illness and has been under hospice care. A hospice nurse checking on him found the body at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
Neighbors says the victim was found in bed and Howald was sleeping in another bed in the same room. He says the apparent murder weapon was on the floor in the room and that it is a type of garden tool.
Neighbors says the victim, who was in the bed, had severe blunt force trauma to the head and neck and parts of the upper body.
Howald was being held without bond pending an appearance in Hot Springs District Court.
