LAGRANGE — Maine police say a state trooper shot and wounded a pit bull after the animal attacked its owner and forced the owner to barricade himself in a room at his Lagrange home. Police say they received a 911 call Sunday afternoon from two men who reported one of them had been mauled by the dog. The men retreated into a room and closed the door while the dog was trying to chew its way through the door.

Trooper Adam Coover told the Bangor Daily News the 29-year-old owner, whose name was not released, was treated for puncture wounds on his neck, legs and arms and then released.

The 3-year-old dog was taken to a veterinarian who euthanized the animal.

I was reading the comments after the story. It's always interesting to see the difference in views about a particular breed of dog. I have to agree that it's uncommon for most breeds to turn on the owner, but I've heard of Rottweilers and Pit Bulls doing just that. By nature, they are aggressive dogs and extremely territorial. Behaviors of particular breeds aside, illness or infection will cause most dogs to attack without being provoked. Maybe the Pit Bull was rabid. Maybe the owner mistreated it and it was fighting back. Maybe it was just an aggressive, instinctual dog from birth. I've been around dogs that were Pit Bull mixed and they wouldn't harm a thing. I'm not much of a fan of any full-breed, really. They've all been inbred and have physical or behavioral ailments because of it. You want a dog? Go visit the local pound. There's many mixed breeds needing good homes. As soon as we get a place with a nice yard, that's where we'll get our dog.

I don't know much about dogs but if they were going to kill it anyway, couldn't they have put it out of it's misery at the scene? Rather than shooting it, then having to take it all the way to a vets and wait for it to be euthanised. I guess they probably have to do it that way but I hate to think that the poor thing was lying in a box in pain for some time before it was put to sleep.

I know it hurt someone first, but it's a dumb animal, it would have only understood that it was in pain, not cause and effect in the same way we link the crime and the punishment.

I agree with you HK, I know they probably had to test it for rabies but my understanding is they can do that on a dead animal too. I know of only one pit bull, personally, but she is a gentle, sweet thing. I'm naturally skittish around them and rottweilers, but I am willing to give any animal a chance, not foolishly, but a chance.

With ANY dog, it depends on it's upbringing and it's training. Martha Stewart was attacked by her dog a week ago, and it's a Chow for gods sake. It really sucks that Pits get cast in a bad light. If you watch this show called Pit Boss on Animal Planet, you'll see how sweet and kind Pit Bulls really are.

Ummm, chows are the MEANEST fucking dogs I have EVER come across. Even groomers say that chows are one of the worst brands to deal with. I'm sure there's some really sweet ones, though.

Not true. Different breeds have different behaviors and different qualities. You're not going to teach a Chihuahua to herd steer. You're not going to put a St. Bernard outside in a desert climate and expect to have a happy, loving dog. Each dog can have its own personality, but there are specific qualities among different breeds. That is why people choose full-bred dogs in the 1st place. Pit Bulls can play with children and fetch the mail in a show. That doesn't mean it's a great breed and that I should go out and get one for my 7-yr-old. Again, I believe in mixing breeds. Full-bred male pups mate with their mother or sisters to produce full-bred offspring. In-breeding is not the way to go.
