Similar to a sex offender registry... His examples of why there should be one aren't strong enough. You should know the people your children get rides from and that hold you accountable. I say it's a waste of money.

(This is coming from someone who got into a car with two girls who happened to be drunk and totaled the back end of about 5 parked cars as they tried to bring me home. But then again, I'm an adult and should have known better... )

Re: Maine lawmaker wants to create a drunk drive ofender website

I would be in favor of that. I detest drunk drivers and all the carnage they create. Anything that might discourage someone from driving while impared is good by me.

Maybe I'd be in favor of such a site if he made a strong case instead of coming off like he's trying to make up for some inadequacies in his parenting.

Permanent punishment is against the American way. This scarlet letter shit is for the birds. That goes for the sex offender list as well.

Drink driving isn't the same as being a threat to children. As much as I detest drunk drivers, many drivers will be caught once, and will never drive drunk again. I don't want to see them on that website.
The sex offender list is not only people that are threats to children, just like a drunk driver list would not be only severe & consistent dangerous drunks. You're right. A list like this would paint even the unlucky guy caught driving once just over the limit with the same brush as the guy convicted of manslaughter.

" Unlucky Guy " ??? You meant to say the guy that made a very stupid decision didn't you. Anyone that gets behind the wheel of a vehicle while impaired is more of a a potential killer than someone that isn't. I would rather walk on the road knowing a sex offender is coming at me than a drunk in a 2000 lb killing machine.

What's the point? All these stupid campaigns do is encorage vigalantees and waste even more police time and money sorting them out.

What good would this list do? Even knowing you have a neighbor who has driven drunk what are you going to do, watch his/her comings and goings? Teaching your children not to get in a car with a drunk driver is more important than screening if a prospective date/driver, etc., has ever been convicted of it.

I do support repeated drunk drivers, after having served their sentence, having a breathalyzer on their car. But then they have shown that they sometimes talk a non-drinker (such as a child) to take the test to start the car anyway.

My point before was if there was a list maybe it might discourage even one person from getting behind the wheel under the influenced because he / she doesn't want their name added to said list.

Or it might even encorage them to use their car more, even when drunk because of people giving them abuse when they walk down the road.

Well then I suppose your scenario would apply to absolute certified idiots because the purpose of a list like that would be to discourage anyone from ever getting behind the wheel when impaired. In other words... if you don't want your name on the list don't drink and drive... ever. It's all about making the proper decisions in life. I have yet to meet someone who has driven drunk from having a gun held to their head and forcing them to do it.

Anyway, if the threat of prison, losing their license and possibly their job isn't enough of a deterrent to stop people drink driving, I seriously doubt that having their name put on a public list will make any more difference.

I agree Peter and that's why I said this....

Anything that might discourage someone from driving while impaired is good by me.

The key word is " might ". If it stops just one person from killing someone it's a worthwhile endeavor imo.
