Lutherans OK pastors in gay couples 'That is huge,’ says spokesman for 4.8 million-member church

Updated: 12:06 p.m. CT Aug 11, 2007
CHICAGO - Clergy members who are in homosexual relationships will be able to serve as pastors, the largest U.S. Lutheran body said Saturday.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America passed a resolution at its annual assembly urging bishops to refrain from disciplining pastors who are in “faithful committed same-gender relationships.”
The resolution passed by a vote of 538-431.
“The Church ... has just said, ‘Do not do punishments,’” said Phil Soucy, spokesman for Lutherans Concerned, a gay-lesbian rights group within the church. “That is huge.”
The ELCA, which has 4.8 million members, had previously allowed gays to serve as pastors so long as they abstained from sexual relations.
The conference also instructed a committee that is developing a social statement on sexuality to further investigate the issue. The committee is scheduled to release its report in 2009.
Since the ELCA was founded in 1988, the group has ordered three pastors in gay relationships to be removed from their ministries. The most recent case was decided in July when the ELCA’s committee on appeals voted to remove an openly gay pastor from St. John’s Lutheran Church in Atlanta.
The gay clergy issue has become a flashpoint in other faiths, including the Anglican Church.

I believe there are 3 branches of Lutherans. (if there are more, please post them) I believe the 3 branches are ELCA, Wisconsin Synod, and Missouri Synod.

OK, I admit my ignorance on this topic, but does anyone know how many
'religions' now accept/condone/include homosexuals in their church?

What about it doesn't sit right with you?

I have plenty of wonderful brothers and sisters in Christ, but not all of them, including myself are suited to serve as a Shepperd to a flock.

For a person to serve as a Minister/Pastor/Etc., they should not only believe in Christ but also be following His teachings. So when it comes to choosing a Pastor, the goal should be to find someone who is as Christ-like as humanly possible.

Men are not called to change the Word of God to suit ourselves or the current trend of society.

Christ's teachings teach that homosexuals should not preach?
I thought all Christians were spozed to teach 'n preach.

Personally I think every religious person does this. They interpret some stuff to fit what they believe.

Makes sense to me...Aren't priests supposed to devout their life to God? And run the house of God? Sounds like a womans job to me. They must be gay then. Besides what kind of man wouldn't want to have sex with a woman and prefer little boys lol they like the ass.

It dosen't make sense because the Bible is deeply homophobic, why any gay person would want to be a Christian is beyond me. Its like a black person wanting to join the KKK.:confused

I have quite a few friends that are gay and Christian.

Saying that you don't understand why gays would want to be Christian is really no different than saying why do liars want to be Christian or why do gossipers want to be Christian or why do people that don't respect their parents want to be Christian.

We all do things that God considers wrong. None of us are perfect. But that doesn't mean that we need to turn our backs on our Creator just because He has lovingly laid out some rules for our own protection.

So what you're saying is its ok to be gay and Christian as long as you know being gay is wrong?:confused That makes no sense, why would you want to be attached to a group of people who believe your sexuality is wrong?
