Learning from porcupines...

Have you ever seen a baby porcupine?

Fable of the porcupine

It was the coldest winter ever. Many animals died because of the cold. The porcupines, realizing the situation, decided to group together. They were covered and protected, but the quills of each wounded the closest companion. After awhile, they decided to distance themselves, and they began to die, alone and frozen. So they had to make a choice: either accept the quills of their companions or disappear from the Earth. Wisely, they decided to go back to being together. They learned to live with the little wounds that were caused by their close relationships because the most important part was the heat that came from the others. They were able to survive. The best relationship is not the one that brings together perfect people, but the one that forms when individuals learn to live with the imperfections and admire the good qualities of others.

The Moral of the story:

LEARN TO LOVE THE PRICKS IN YOUR LIFE.

Was that you holding one of those baby porcupines ?

They look so cute

PD,
It is illegal to own porcupines.. and if you do, the risks are many!.. Jail and fines would be the least of your worries..;)
The quills they shoot are almost impossible to get out without medical help.. :eek :willy_nilly::willy_nilly:

Porcupines have quills, hedgehogs have spines.. like a cactus.. :D

The animal in those pictures, is not a porcupine... it is a Hedgehog!..
I used to breed them for a pet shop years ago.. along with many other species of small animals....:)
It is very difficult to breed hedgehogs, because mommy hedgehog will eat the babies if you happen to touch them after they are born!.. :eek

I lost countless of them because I went to clean the cages without realizing there were babies, and although my two females were tame and trusted me, their instinct was bigger than their trust, and as soon as they smelled my scent on the babies, they would kill them..

They haven't been domesticated for a long enough time in order to loose those instincts.

The babies are very tiny when born -the size of a fingernail- They are blind and their spines are soft for about a week.. then they start to get hard and extremely prickly..
They are very cute, but unless they are handled many times a day after they are weaned, they will not let you handle them at all, and roll up into a very prickly ball, making a noise that seems to be from out of this world.. :p

Since they also eat meat, their poop does not smell very pretty.. :eek:willy_nilly:

In all, they are a neat pet, but only for those with lots of experience and time to handle and take proper care of them, and like ferrets, most definitely they are not for those with weak noses!!.. :yuk

Where our home was before backing to a forest, i've seen a lot of those on the pics. I never knew tho' if they were hedgehogs or porcupines. Hey thanks for sharing that info :thumbup

I did wonder about those spines even on the baby ones hence my query. I thought that they were prickly in some way :eek :p

Dogs love em.....I've seen some horrible photos of dogs literally covered in quills.....not pretty.

We have echidnas here. They have a four headed penis....four times the fun:D
