I'm not sure where to put this so in here it goes...

I just saw this special on Starz about the war in Iraq. They were talking about how the "guided missiles" are not accurate at all. They said that when the very first bomb was dropped on the first day of the Iraqi war, ALL of the bombs dropped that day missed their intended targets. All of them. They also said that out of the 50 bombs dropped in that first year, only 3 were on target. They showed pictures of the civilians that were victims of the bombings. The children, oh my God....

I guess what I'm wondering is, are things like that accurate? I mean, EVERY bomb missing its target?? And do they show the video footage of the dying and dead children and all that to make you skip over reasonable thinking?? It made me sick to my stomach to watch these things. And to think that are "smart missiles" are really not so smart at all.....Forgive me if I sound stupid but seeing things like that is enough to give me nightmares....

War is always a terrible thing. Of course you will get bias in the media on both sides about what really happened but I'm sure that if you ask the people on both sides, first hand, who were there the reality of it, it's still very ugly and horrible.

And I have seen videos where they hit the target. The point is you have two choices. Fire a laser guide missile directly at your target or just carpet bomb an entire city in the hopes of hitting your target.
If the laser guided missiles are so often off target then why spend billions developing and using them? Carpet bombing would be easier and cheaper.

This sounds a little exaggerated to me. True, I don't know exactly what happened over there. My father is missile expert for the Australian Navy, and while he was posted over here I got to see a lot of info on the American missile systems, including video of testings. In those testings they were able to choose which window on a car the missile would penetrate. Pretty impressive stuff.

But hey, like I said, I don't know what happened over there.

Missles can work in testing then fail in operation. Though a 0% success rate is a little hard to believe.

I think I saw that video. There's actually a pretty good amount of "smart" weapons that don't actually hit their target and kill civilians.

If you fire enough of them yes but the civilian dead will be a fraction compared to the old ways. The fact they use them shows they are trying to avoid civilian casualties.
Nothing ever works perfectly.

The whole point was to get Saddam. If they were so concerned about casualties, they could have not bombed at all and just gone in on foot. But they weren't, they were more concerned with showing off military might next door to Iran.

I think the point of the documentary was to show the distaste of some of those enlisted, as well as certain cabinet members, former advisers, etc. They had some pretty convincing stuff....I just think though that if it were so true, why would you show so many videos and photos of the victims? I'm not really sure why this bothers me so much, but I can't get those pictures out of my head...

Erm, wasn't going in on foot the main way they did the invasion anyway? I know a lot of bombing was done first and without discrediting that, I think the land invasion probably was the bigger factor.

In todays world you cannot fight without air support. The point of war is to destroy your enemy's ability to wage war. That includes bombing missile sites, radar, communications, airports, power etc.

Okay okay, the point I was trying to make is, when you have cabinet members, former and current, that say that they would NEVER allow their children to enter any of the armed forces in this country, there's something seriously wrong here!

Why does everything have to be turned into a personal attack? I mean, is it so hard to actually stay on topic??
