Congress: Clunkers set for passage - First Read - msnbc.com

Hypocrisy watch? "Last year, lawmakers excoriated the CEOs of the Big Three automakers for traveling to Washington, D.C., by private jet to attend a hearing about a possible bailout of their companies," Roll Call reports. "But apparently Congress is not philosophically averse to private air travel: At the end of July, the House approved nearly $200 million for the Air Force to buy three elite Gulfstream jets for ferrying top government officials and Members of Congress. The Air Force had asked for one Gulfstream 550 jet (price tag: about $65 million) as part of an ongoing upgrade of its passenger air service."
Gee, I hope they're electric luxury jets, since Congress is so set to improve the environment. :cool

The conservative talk shows are spinning it that Congress is buying jets for Congress to use for themselves. The truth is damaging enough without spin. Anybody know where the manufacturing plant is? I'll bet the congressman for that district has his fingerprints all over this.

Gulfstream is the make. I saw where two congressmen who supported it got $10k in donations from Gulfstream.

And the military only asked for one jet

what a load a shit these morons in congress are.

Gulfstream Aerospace is based in Savannah, GA. Jack Kingston, a Republican, represents District 1 of Georgia in the US House of Representatives, which includes Savannah. He is a member of the House Appropriations Committee, which directs federal spending - spending such as purchasing luxury jets from Gulfstream. From the site: "Jack has fought to rein in federal spending and ensure that your hard earned tax dollars are spent responsibly."

This is hardly responsible spending.

not true

it is the one time a stimulus had immediate impact

I was really hoping that the second go at this (the next 2 billion in the pipeline) would have a buy American clause. Or at the very least make it so American purchased cars got a larger rebate...

so much for holding my breath

Why? Most of them are manufactured in Canada or Mexico anyway. If you want to buy a car built in the USA buy US employees, better go with Toyota, Mercedes, Hyundai, Honda...

Tis a double edged sword

Made in America is not so easy to determine anymore.

Buying a car made here may help the workers but the profits end up over seas if it is Honda, Toyota etc.

I've stated this many times over, over here.... but it is akin to :horse

However; the money going to the workers will (hopefully) be spent on items in the United States..

No, the profits end up with the stockholders, and those people are world wide - whether it's Honda, GM, Toyota, or Ford.
