ok so many, if not all of you, probably did not know that I am (or rather, was) a huge star trek fan (big shocker :p just a fan, not a "trekkie" that dresses up as a klingon or some weirdo shit like that...

JJ Abrams killed star trek for me. omg why is it that every prequel they have better technology? they had a talking computer before James T. Kirk was born! And touchscreen computers! When the "original" Enterprise had toggle switches (in The Original Series)!
I quote from Memory Alpha "The computer voice of the USS Enterprise was reprogrammed in 2267 on Cygnet XIV, with the intent on giving it a less mechanized personality. The resulting modifications caused the computer to address James Kirk in an increasingly amorous manner. (TOS: "Tomorrow is Yesterday") "Jame T. Kirk Born: 22 March 2233 (stardate 1277.1)
OK so Kirk was born in 2233 and the Enterprise computer got the voice in 2267 (31 years later...), and the beginning of movie took place in 2233 (same year Kirk is born... with the touchscreens and talking computers and a Warp Core that can be ejected in FOUR PIECES apparently...)

And why does the bad guy wait 25 FUCKING YEARS doing nothing just to "get revenge." how about... GO HUNTING

Swords... you got lazer guns and warp fucking drive and transporters and Heisenberg Compensator and you're fighting with a folding sword? ok sulu you're gay OMG TOO SOON?

Kirk is grounded for fucking up and he's automatically given second in command just for remembering something that happened the day he was fucking born?? OK sure he's supposed to become the captain sooner or later BUT COME THE FUCK ON

UHURA KISSING SPOCK!! :mad NO. UHURA KISSED KIRK!!!

the enterprise did not have pulse phasers!! :mad Pulse phasers (Optronically Targeted Phasers) were developed for and installed on the USS Defiant (from deep space nine) and even then, they can only fire in-line of the course of travel. This was the year 2373 (approximately, again, during the time of Deep Space Nine, approximately 100 years :mad NO)

And when Kirk relieves Christopher Pike of his command, have we as a country become to PC that we can't show Chris Pike in his beep-beep wheelchair??

these are the "original" control panels on the enterprise...

I think youre looking into this too deeply... I don'tr think the movie would have been very successful if it looked lika 1960s throwback... They also cheesy special effects back then. Do you want them to use them in the movie?

The cheesy teen thriller author is in Star Trek? I got to this point, started laughing at the memories of the books, and forgot what you were talking about.

I am also a huge Star Trek fan, unfortunately I have already forgotten far more than I ever knew about it... but I think that you missed some of the point. This Star Trek is set in an alternative time line where slightly different things happened than in the original series (TOS). A quick point was that Kirk's father was a drunk that used to beat him up in TOS, but in the reboot he died as Kirk was born.

The technology is also slightly different because, after the attack on Kirk's father, humans realised that space was more dangerous than was thought in TOS (... their 5 year mission... was basically exploration & peace), so the ship is fitted with better shielding & weapons. You'lll find in this version that no one mentions the Prime Directive.

Perhaps some of the engineers that developed Speaking Computers (thank God for Majel Barret), died in the attack that killed Kirk's father or they shifted to efforts to more efficient weapons.

This is not meant to be the same show that Gene Roddenberry brought us, but a different world where different choices could be made leading to different stories.

My parents said they saw it and thought it was great. I've seen all the trek movies.

I can tell you it looked a hell of a lot more interesting than watching an hour of Scott Bakula....

I quite liked it and I did used to watch a lot of star trek when I was a child.

I just ignore the differences like that. It's just a different version of a franchise like Batman.
