Let's have a chat (or rant) about our ISP's.

Mine's been doing strange stuff lately. In the last few days I've found my internet going significantly slower than usual. I did some speed tests and averaged about 5-6 mbps, 9 mbps maximum and 1-2 at the worst moments. Normally I'd average about 9 mbps, with a maximum of around 15. Now, this is still much slower than what my ISP promises (50 mbps), but at least I didn't have to wait 2 minutes for a simple page to load. I know we didn't go over any datacap because there isn't any, and according to their website we've downloaded less than 100 Gb this month, which is lower than the datacap of a cheaper package.

Here comes the best part: Yesterday I went to my ISP's website, just to check if there was a message about maintenance in my area that might explain my speeds. For some reason (I can't for the life of me remember why) I went to check up on their packages. What do I see: The offered download speed of every single available package has been taken down from 50 mbps to 30 mbps (the only difference lies in upload speed, data cap and 3G download speed). We didn't get an e-mail, no PSA, no message on the radio, nothing.

So, what are your stories about your ISP's?

Btw, this is what I'm getting right now:

I live in Canada, and a lot of times my ISP (Roger's) just decides to start throttling everyone in my area. I end up with speeds less than 10% of what I pay for, especially the upload speeds, where those are the most important for loading webpages (not really download, as many people would like to think). Over the past few weeks however, I haven't really experienced anything odd with my internet, and I hope it stays that way.

Wait, could you explain how upload speed is more important than download speed for webpages? I get that you need to send requests and such, but upload being more important doesn't feel quite right.

That doesn't sound right for me either. The upload is used to send a request, but download is used to download the actual webpage. I don't have a really good upload speed, but my download is actually pretty decent, and I load pages pretty fast. A slower upload speed could create a gap between you sending the request and actually loading the page.

This is pretty average, I've never downloaded anything before so download speed isn't too important, the only thing that annoys me is when I stream stuff online (Breaking Bad normally) it takes so long for the entire video to load.

I've had the same ISP for 10 years or something crazy like that, but it works and it does what I want. We don't have Netflix, but I watch a lot of iPlayer and Youtube and rarely have problems with buffering.
