Would you show up to a christening in jeans and a football shirt?

Or for the less religiously inclined, to a funeral, or wedding?

Certain occasions almost instinctively require a certain dress code, unless deliberately stated otherwise. Is dressing down to a formal occasion becoming more acceptable?

Football? thats not casual dress... When I think casual dress. I think jeans/khakis and a nice dress shirt, tucked or untucked. football? no.

Jeans and a tshirt is casual. khakis and a polo or button down shirt is considered business casual.

With regard to the OP, I always try to appropriately dress based on occasion.

Well football jerseys would be inapropriate in my mind. Thats like some dudes at my friends wedding that were wearing skin tight old t-shirts and raggedy jeans and they were 300-400 pounds Not appropriate attire.

I did :D

Let me explain. Couple of years ago I was due at this baby's christening, she was my mate's kid (still is actually) and because I'd been out the night before I got up late, then I realised I had to be up so I hurried up and just threw a random t shirt on and jeans. Straight after the service I went home and got smarter. I made my apologies and it was forgotten.

But I think there's a certain code to uphold if it's a special occasion.

I don't think anyone disagrees with your assertion that a jersey would be inappropriate. I'm just letting you know that HKs definition of "casual" is right, and what you described as your interpretation of the word is generally considered business casual and is a common dress code in business places with a laid back attitude. People in call centers can, in the right situations, get away with jeans and t-shirts, but most places require khakis and polos. and i would say that "business casual" would be the least you could do in terms of christenings or funerals or something like that.

I saw a lot of people in bummy clothes at a family friend's wedding and yes, I think it's sort of disrespectful. I have sympathy for those with limited funds, but these people had limited sense.

Someone else covered it, but what you're describing is business casual.

Theres always ways of finding nice clothing really cheap. Goodwill for instance.

True. Or there could be friends to borrow clothes from if you happen to have friends of the same size.

Besides i doubt dissolute person with zero money would give two shits about a christening in the first place.

That's an asinine statement. Sorry, but it is.

As for the OP, I personally find it disrespectful. At the least you could wear a nice dress shirt w/ some jeans.

I'd rather have someone dress as a bum and I know them for who they are, then to have them wear cheap clothes trying to "dress up" pretending to be someone who they aren't.

As long as the person is clean and trying to look neat, that would be good enough for me.

I knew I might of found the right church the other week when the bass player in the band was wearing a "54" Bears football jersey.

I think dressing down to a special event is very disrespectful. There is a general dress code to certain events that everyone knows about and unless stated otherwise you should be respectful of that. A couple of months ago I went to a wedding and one of the men showed up in old shitty jeans, a t-shirt and sneakers! The bride actually mentioned to me that she was annoyed that he showed up wearing that so it certainly doesn't go unnoticed!
