Is America at War?

I'm sorry if there has already been a thread like this, I haven't been around much lately, lol.

But anyway, I wanted to ask all of you, out of curiosity, if you think America is at war. And no, I don't mean the War on Terror, or anything related to that. I'm talking about the kind of war that doesn't really use explosives or armies of soldiers. I am talking about the Republicans and the Democrats--I mean, it just sometimes seems like each individual party is bent on having the country go the way they think it should go, and in some ways... well, if things keep going like this, with the two warring political factions, things could just get messy.

At times I almost wonder if one political party might be better, because this almost seems like a political-civil-war--just a war without weapons, but where words and ideals are used. But at the same time... it's still nice to have the ability to choose a point of view you'd rather support. Although lately, I find myself more of a middle-of-the-road person, more than anything else...

But meh. What do you guys think?

Interesting thread. I think both sides are overreacting. Obama isn't going to save the world but neither is he going to destroy it.

It's always been this way, with the Republicans and the Democrats though. Just as it's the same with parties here, there will always be this conflict and difference of views, and opinions. I don't think you are at war in this sense you're talking about. I just think the media, propaganda, and various parties should, as you said, work more together, rather than bring each other down, and the nation with it. This would then maybe help in the real war that's going on, with hundreds of soldiers being killed.

No, there will always be various parties. A no-party system? We need a government...
I didn't say no government, I said no parties. I would rather see 535 independants in our Congress. All of these hacks in there right now are more beholden to their parties than their constituents. They base their opinions on issues off of what their party tells them instead of what they or the people who elected them believe. That is wrong. As long as we have partisan BS going on in Washington, things will not get better. The parties have become way too powerful, to the point where real change is in the best interest of neither.

Are you in favour of a dictatorship?
No Pete, I'm not.

Ah, ok. I just see what you think should happen in the same light as Communism, in a way. Great idea in principle but useless when dealing with dishonest greedy, mankind.

It might not work, but it also probably couldn't do any worse!

Worth a try, I give you that. Could you honestly see it happening in a country so paranoid about Communism though? I mean, it is slightly getting on that wavelength.

I would like to see a no party system also. And elimination of lobbyists. Public financing to take away the need to continually raise campaign money. The robots in DC vote based on party line most of the time.

I am not stupid though and realize it all is a pipe dream. It is a war of ideals. Both party are blood thirsty power mongers

It isn't communism at all. Communism is a form of government. I'm not advocating for the US to be non-democratic. I would just like to see the party system end.

So, there would be no titles, we'd all vote based on issues? I can dig that.

I'm not so sure about having Congress be all independents, unless you meant that strictly in terms of party, and still had states represented by proportions...?

Nothing changes except we get rid of the political parties.

No titles then. No more elephant, and no more jack-ass!

I don't see why not. When I did my local elections research, I had John read me the person's positions and, promise not to kick me out of the conservatives in exile, found I voted Democrat a lot.

I think the country is so screwed up because people feel obligated to vote based on party.

Exactly what I'm getting at. That and the fact that the parties are so powerful it makes it almost impossible for someone to get elected without the backing of one or the other. It's not what it was intended to be.
