Totally agree, that is just singling out Christians as somehow better than others simply because of their religion which is clearly prejudiced. Personally I'm of the opinion that religion should be kept out of politics, as far as possible, anyway.

Replace the word Christian with African American, or Gay / Bi / Trans, or Americans with Disabilities, and I"m sure you atheists would love this bill.

Double standard a bit much? :)

Don't you think this is taking the religioon debate a bit too far?
I have been called not a real Christian because I like some atheists far more than most Christians, and because I am a firm supporter of freedom to believe and to not believe.
Is it that important that an statement like this was made? how does it affect non-Christians?

The point about atheism is only an observation that the only reason we're going through this exercise is because somebody had a specific problem with religion. There are LOTS of these resolutions that move through the Congress, but the only one we see here has to do wtih religion.

That was my only point. :)

Well, I would hope that anyone with common sense would see this as useless, no matter what their belief.

It's an affermation of support for a very large portion of the population. It isn't saying they're going to do anything special, it's basically a flowery way of saying, you guys exist, and we're not going to go out of our way to say you don't.

It isn't a law, like you said. It's just a nice thing to say. :)

I'm pretty sure they already know this, considering most of the population of this country is Christian. its political lip service, nothing more.

It's all part of a representitive government. When 75% of a people feel a certain way, they're going to vote a certain way. :)

Picked up some new information on this topic. I watched an interview with the guy who put it forward.

The reason he did it was because over the past three or four months, similar resolutions had moved through the pipe for support of Muslims at Ramadan, and one for a group of Hindu religious holidays. He thought it would be silly to not do one for Christians too for Christmas.

Interestingly, there were nine Democrats who voted against the Christian vote, but voted for the two others. ... Like you named the thread, … Interesting.

I would be okay with that. Either way really for me.

Out of curiosity, did you find much complaint about the other two resolutions? They were October timeframe I believe.

im a christian and i find that a little bizarre.

we have a constitutional monarchy which is defender of this particular faith, when we have our next monarch he will be defendeer of faiths...all of them

in a multicultural and democratic society all faiths should be defended not just one...or two or three...but all.

this smacks of fundamental nutters, you should beware of fundamental nutters they cause wars
