Every fall pop-up seasonal shops called "Spirit Halloween" crop up all over the U.S. Our local shop opened in mid-August and since my wife and I like to visit the store we decided to look around. The manager is a female around the age of my son and seemed to be a little overwhelmed with all that was going on just getting up and running. We talked for a few minutes and left.

Here is the interesting part. I retired January 1st and turned 66 in August. I thought about the manager and decided to go back and offer to help out. We talked and she said unfortunately she could not accept my help. She said she could hire me if I wanted to work. I laughed and decided to apply for the job. The last job application I filled out was 42 years ago. I told her what hours I was willing to work and that I did not want to take hours from anyone trying to make a living. I was hired, so for the last 2 weeks I have worked 10 to 12 hours a week unloading trucks and shuffling merchandise. I am the odd looking employee for sure as the old white guy with no piercings or tattoos but I am okay with it, and they seem to be as well. Everyone there is between teenager and early 40's. I have worked with one lady who is deaf and once we established she can read lips we work well together. It has been fun but I am tired at the end of my shift.

But wait, so you are currently retired? Is your retirement money enough to live on month after month or did you retire with your personal savings?

To answer your question we planned ahead. We have no payments accept utilities & insurance outside of food, gas and medical expenses. So far we have not drawn on savings, we have used interest earned to pay for a couple of home projects.

This reminds me of my father. My father used to work as a journalist, and when he retired he decided to go to his farm house an raise cattle. When people saw him doing manual labor they always stopped to watch him. They had never seen my father who used employed workers in his farm actually shovel dung.
