after all these years it still doesn't add up

all of the smaller craft are powered by the mothership, including the fighters etc......then the film goes to area 51 where they had one from roswell, which had just started working, must be the power source of the mothership making it work.......how did it get to earth in the first place?

That's the bit that doesn't add up?

What about the bit where Jeff Goldblum writes a virus for an alien software system? :surrender

There was a scene which was cut from the film that was supposed to have shown how he was able to interact with their technology.

The mother ship seemed to provide the shield somehow for each ship big and small, they still had pilots. I'd say that one was sent to earth to scout out the area and one of the aliens spilled his Big Gulp on the control panel.

If you re-watch the movie. The spaceship at area 51 and the alien were there since like the 30's. The ship became active again when the mothership was close. The mad scientist was all excited with how the ship was reacting and how they were gathering data.

but what powered it?

My best guess is that it had a power source that was damaged when it crashed. When the mothership came into range, a backup source was activated that was able to power it directly from the mothership.

Problem solved.

Uhm, why couldn't a "mother ship" be around back then when they found the alien ship they were keeping in 51? Could of been a scouting mission.
