Imus' racial comments...

So this dude Imus makes a racial comment about the Rutgers Women's basketball team calling them "Nappy-headed hoes." The backlash from this comment was insane, and Imus was fired a week later. Do you guys think this is right? How do you feel about the double standard?


I think it was fucked up to fire the dude over this comment. It is ok for black people to crack jokes on white people all the time, but then the minute a white person does it it's SUCH a big deal. It just pisses me off. Black comedians especially, all the time, rip on white people...if white comedians talked about black people that way, the FCC would regulate on them too. What about the Duke Lacrosse team? When they were in trial for a rape case against a black woman, Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton couldn't keep their fucking mouths shut about how guilty those boys were...yet where is their apology? Imus had to apologize...hmm yeah.

I personally have no problem with racial jokes as long as the're not done in a way to stir up and express hatred. I mean, whats so offensive about jokes implying that black people have big shlongs? Howard Stern summed it up very well in the film Private Parts.
"Black people say they are unfairly stereotyped. Man, I'd love to have that stereotype!"

I agree with what you have to say. So much for freedom of speech. Although the comment was a bit rude. And if it was a black person that was doing it, it would have been look at as funny. IMO.

Freedom of speech or not, NBC and CBS got so much backlash and so many complaints their main concern is ratings and money. The public says they want him gone, well CBS/NBC are going to release him. Freedom of Speech only goes so far (and yes I think his right was violated), but obviously his contract was not violated. When Stern first became a national show NBC COULD NOT fire him, no matter what he did without paying him a severance package and a full years salary no matter if he was working or not.

It's apparent his contract had no clause's as such, so NBC/CBS had every right to fire him from the public outcry.

Reguardless of anything. He should have been fired. If you cause the company losses, the company will lose you. Makes no sense to have someone around that sours up your name. I agree with James on this one.

This was just discussed on ESPN's "jim rome" great show btw. I think its bull shit as well, hes arguemtn was whats the difference from this guy saying it and getting fired, from every other rapper, and entertainer saying racial slurs and recieving no penalty at all? Seriously what happened to the first amendment! One big difference mentioned was that Imus appealed to a business crowd older profressionals, where as the rappers, and singers, and entertainers appeal to a hyounger more hip crowd..still double standards should not be set.

I definitely think so. I didn't even know nappy-headed hoes was a racist comment until I read it a million times on the interwebz. And now that I see the definition of nappy-headed, I'm still not sure it's a racist comment.

maybe NBC/CBS did the right thing in firing a man who was causing bad publicity, but it saddens me it was such an issue in the first place.

Personally I don't agree with how the whole situation was handled. However Imus will probably go to satellite radio, just like Stern.
