I’m torn. As some of you guys know I’ve been entertaining job offers as I recently graduated. I ended up getting an extremely good job offer at a company (#1) that I would very much like to work for. Meanwhile, I’m awaiting another offer from a company (#2). I would enjoy working for #2 more than #1. I’ve also phoned interviewed with company #3, which is a good company as well. It doesn’t stop here; company #4 is a place that I interned at in my fiancé’s home town. Now I’m sure some people would be thrilled to have this many options, but here’s where it gets complicated. Each option has a major drawback.

Company #1 – If I were to accept this job I would start in 2 weeks (positive). I would, however, have to move. I very much want to stay in this area. My grandparents need me to help with their place for 1. Secondly, Nicole currently teaches at a school here. If I were to move she would have to move at the end of the year also (since we are getting married in May). She would then have to look for a new job. She is also very close with her family and it would be very hard on her to pack up and leave. Granted, we would only be 1 ½ hrs away, but she is used to seeing her family daily. This devastates me that I may cause her to leave all of this. If she didn’t find a teaching job right off it really would not be much of an issue, as my salary could fully support both of us. She feels that she would be inadequate if she didn’t work though. I fully disagree. I don’t think this would be an issue to begin with. I am very confident she would get another teaching job. BTW, I must give an answer by the end of this week.

Company #2 - Basically the same location issues number 1, just a different town. The main difference here is the actual job it self. I would absolutely love to work for this company. The problem is the job that I would start at. I feel that I would get very bored with it and not feel satisfied or challenged. The company has great opportunities though, and I know that in a year or two I could take advantage of them, I just don’t know if I could wait that long.

Company #3 – A good company. I’ve only had a phone interview with this company. The location is very good, as Nicole could keep her current job. The problem here is that I don’t even know if I will get an onsite interview. By the time that I do, it will be the middle to end of this week. By this time I need to have given an answer to #1. I hate to pass up #1 in hopes that I get a comparable offer from this company.

Company #4 – I interned with this company and really liked it. I was also promised a job with a salary and benefits comparable to #1. The problem was this was all verbal, which means BS in corporate culture. They keep telling me they want me to come back. The problem is they are under a corporate hiring freeze at the moment and don’t know when I could start. I can’t afford to wait much longer, nor will I believe simply their word right now. I REALLY want to work for this company, I just don’t think I can take the chance. If I got an offer from them, my life would be near perfect.

Essentially all the problems are caused by location. I will probably accept #1 unless a miracle happens this week. I just feel terrible of what it will cause Nicole. I don’t know though, what do you guys think?

Mm well, wow Tough situation

I know this is probably a bad Idea, but Could #I be a Temporary Job, until something more workable comes up, Like maybe 6 months down #4 gets over the hiring freeze?

I know Temp Jobs with good companies is a BS way to build a carrer and such, But then you have the job if nothing else comes through, Or you at least you dont lose the chance for that job on the hopes of one of the other ones coming through. ( i dont know if that makes sense)

I dont Kevin, Those are choices you are facing there, Best of luck to you.

I would be upfront with them and tell them whats going on... that you dont want to move and what other offers you have... etc.

So it all worked out pretty good. I interviewed today for company #3, which is located where nicole could keep her teaching job. The last person I interviewed with was the VP of operations. As I was leaving she said "Kevin, I will let you know now that you will be receiving and offer from us."

When I got home they had already emailed me an offer. It's slightly lower than my other offers, but not by much. In addition they gave me a nice signing bonus.

I REALLY like this company and the way their organization is structured. This is my first choice out of the 4, and it just so happens it is located somewhat conveniently for me. I'm pretty excited about this opportunity!

i would go for 1. But, I would also ask 3 if there was any way possible you could get an interview this week, because 3 sounds good as well. Or you could accept with 1, and then turn it down later if 3 comes through, but that would be kinda shady and not a great way to start out your career.
