Am I the only one that finds "Joe the Meek"'s name ironic, lol!

You've left out two of the most important questions I asked.

Don't worry Dana, if there is someone I'm not going to argue with, it's a Cliff Clavin wannabe.

You remind me of a couple of relatives I have who are an expert on everything around them but have accomplished nothing with their lives and tend to bitch more than anything else.

Don't you just miss those good old days when you thought EVERY muslim was a terrorist hell bent on killing everyone who didn't believe the same thing they did:tooth

Watch it, or I'll drag Skurka over here:24:

Come to think of it, did you ever know me when you were "cityboyfarmer"?

Blame BCZOOM, it was he who brought us together LMFAO

I'm probably not now

I agree with Mjane, and what Dana's saying. Unless there are serious delays on any scope of functioning, I think holding kids back in kindergarten is mostly stigmatizing. It's all case by case, clearly, and I'm sure they have their reasons which may be very valid. Still, I feel kindergarten should be a social test, and a test of one's ability to attend school. Not much more.

I don't have kids, I don't think I even want them, but you'll have to break my hands to stop me from throwing mah 2 cents ;)

Now surely I wouldn't dream of telling a parent what to do with their child, it's just my impression of kindergarten. I remember the kids that went to "DK" developmental kindergarten, and it had an impact on them, I think. Whether they were going to be socially awkward anyway, idk if this helps.

There are many reasons why a parent may hold a child back. One big one is their social skills. Kindergarten is that prep grade. They learn the importance of having to listen to someone other than their parents and their family. They learn there are many other kids that need attention too and they must be patient. They start learning to read more than they probably did at home with parents. Sometimes behavior issues develop while in kindergarten that may not have existed before so it's best to keep them back to make sure those issues are dealt with without having to shove that child into another grade, which they may not get that attention and help to learn how to control the problems.

No one in my family has been held back, but I'm all for it if that child is simply not ready to move on. I did, however, wait an extra year before sending Michael to kindergarten because I noticed somethings that probably would have caused problems in school and I didn't want him to start off that way. Aiden, on the other hand, started off great and it wasn't til the school year was half over before the school, doctors, and I realized he has ADD/ADHD among a couple other things such as issues with social interactions. As a parent I can say the things he did in school were not things that were being done at home. If Aiden would have needed to be held back I would have done it, but if there's one thing he excels in, it's definitely his academics and he's grown so much behavior wise.

But to go around and say it's pointless or stupid is beyond me. Unless if you've actually had to make the decision then I don't understand how someone could even have an opinion on it without knowing everything first.

More power to the parents that do care and do what needs to be done to help their child exceed, even if it does mean to take the building blocks grade again.
:shesaid Couldn't have said it any better!
For the first three years of my son's school life i BEGGED for the schools to hold my son back(they never did and he struggled and still does). JK, SK and Grade 1 are VERY advanced compared to our colouring and playdoh days. They have a list of what your child needs to know before and during JK and SK. In ontario, canada where i am, children are reading and writing by the halfway point of JK...most kids are only 3 and 4 years old in that grade. By SK(senior kindergarten) they have learned to most basic words that back in my day, we would not have learned to spell until around grade 2 and 3. So you can see, we are in a VERY different time of learning.

Now compare my son's beginning over 10 years ago to my now niece who is in playschool/daycare and not even in proper school yet, and SHE is learning at age 2 what my son was learning in JK and SK. We are advancing in what is being taught in schools so it by no means is a 'stupid or pointless' thing to hold back a child who may not have learned what they NEED for the basic foundations in order to not fall more behind in the higher grades.

You mean the good old daze when you thought you were actually an eloquent communicator as opposed to persistent schlemiel? :tooth

I still think Islam is a shit religion, quite similar to xianity, and the vast majority of terrorists on the planet today tend statistically to be Islamic. :thumbup

You promise? I'll make that fuckwit cry like a little bitch in the debate forums here :D
