I can agree that an apology for slavery is a good measure to reaffirm equal rights, but I mean comon, florida shelled out 2.1 million to DECENDANTS of people who were traumatized 85 years ago?

How does this make sense? Couldn't the state have better spent the money on hurricane preparedness, firefighter/paramedic/police equipment? Fixing up rundown neighborhoods? Something more productive than giving people who experienced nothing some lining in their pockets.

We have all seen or heard of racism in our lives, but to give people free money is just taking it a little bit too far, IMO.

Here's the difference to me. There was survivors of Rosewood that received that money. Remembering Rosewood - The Most Thorough Site But there are no former slaves still alive. That's why I think the apology is OK for slavery in general and money is OK for Rosewood.

Ok, I just still don't get how decendants get monies for it. I'm sure it was tragic for the people there. If a massacre happened that involved my great grandparents, I sure as hell wouldn't expect any money for what happened to them.

I think it went to people that actually lived throught it but I can't find anything for certain. But if decendants are getting money, I want some because I'm Cuban, Irish, and Native American (among many other things). I think I should get some moeny for that if decendants of slaves are getting some.

But with Rosewood, the money didn't go to ancestors of the people, it went to the actual people who lived through it. If Florida had paid those millions to ancestors of slaves, I would agree completely. But they didn't.

I don't disagree with giving reparations to the survivors of the masacre, but if you read the article, the money is given to the descendants as well.

Florida's Legislature agreed to pay $2.1 million in reparations to the survivors and descendants of the all-black town of Rosewood, which was destroyed by a white mob in 1923. The city of Tulsa, Okla., held a commemoration and built a monument marking the 1921 violence that devastated a thriving black community there.

To me that'd be like if they'd thrown the descendants of the participants of the 'white mob' in jail for crimes thier ancestors committed.

I agree 100%. I hate when people bring up slavery, bitching like they've been in it. This leads to them getting money?

If this is the case, they should give money to all the jewish people that had family tourtured in concentration camps back in the holucaust because IMO that was probably much worse.

Things like this piss me off because there are still survivers of Japaneese POW camps around whose minds were fucked up by their treatment and they still can't get a penny in compensation! So much for putting their lives on the line for us during the war!:mad

Rosewood and the Massacre Rosewood says that only survivors got it.

Rosewood Victims vs State of Florida says that survivors get the money, families that can prove they lost property, and there should be a scholarship fund set up for the decendants and families.

And Peter, I agree that everyone should be compensation for everyone who lived through something like that. The Japanese, though, began receiving compensation in 1990.

Yes, I find it hard to work out how they decide which sectre of ppl get money over the others - i.e., the Jewish ppl, warm loving ppl, get nothing???? No, this isn't right at all.

If it's good enough for one group of ppl who suffered, then it is to be the same for all.

Believe me Im not pro slavery in any way but slavery is made out to be such a bad thing. Yes there where some bad apples that tainted it but it wasnt all bad. Most slaves where like family. At that time people had large families to work on the farm. If your farm was to big for the size of your family you bought slaves and most where treated like family. Family didnt get paid for there work, they got room and board. But thats not even my issue with this. None of my family was in the US at this time. We had nothing to do with any slaves. Y should my hard earned taxes go to relatives of people that I had nothing to do with. If you are gonna pay descendants of slaves make the descendants of slave owners do it(Like that would ever hapen). Im shure out there there are many people that are both descendants of slaves and descendants of slave owners. Should they get reparation?

Sorry, but that is uninformed bullshit. If you actually read about the history of slavery you will see the terrible things the slaves had to endure.

It's like the story going rounnd atm about the apology for the 'comfort women' in Japan, I think it was..... I say let it the hell GO already. Compensate of need be, but for the right reason, not political favour-currying or buttering, which is normally the case....
