I've been told, by a friend who lives in Dallas, have not researched it yet...

If you are a property owner, vote No For Referendum 1 and 2 which allows the State to tack $$ on to your property tax bill as needed for State funding. Anyone know about this?

My search so far online for info on this issue has been in vain. Texas ballot initiatives, propositions, what? :(

That's absurd, since property taxes are already so ridiculously high in Texas. I paid 3.5x more in property taxes in Texas than I did in California, on a house that was worth 1/2 of what my house in California was.

THE INFORMATION BELOW WAS FOR MARCH 2010 PRIMARY BALLOT. THERE ARE NO STATEWIDE PROPOSITIONS ON THE NOVEMBER 2010 BALLOT. THERE MAY BE LOCAL PROPOSITIONS IN YOUR AREA. CHECK WITH YOUR COUNTY FOR SUCH INFORMATION.
Ballot Proposition #1: Photo ID-The Texas legislature should make it a priority to protect the integrity of our election process by enacting legislation that requires voters to provide valid photo identification in order to cast a ballot in any and all elections conducted in the State of Texas. YES OR NO
Ballot Proposition #2: Controlling Government Growth-Every government body in Texas should be required to limit any annual increase in its budget andspending to the combined increase of population and inflation unless it first gets voter approval to exceed the allowed annual growth or in the case of an official emergency. YES OR NO
Ballot Proposition #3: Cutting Federal Income Taxes-In addition to aggressively eliminating irresponsible federal spending, Congress should empowerAmerican citizens to stimulate the economy by Congress cutting federal income taxes for all federaltaxpayers, rather than spending hundreds of billions of dollars on so-called “federal economic stimulus”. YES OR NO
Ballot Proposition #4: Public Acknowledgement of God-The use of the word “God”, prayers, and the Ten Commandments should be allowed at public gatherings and public educational institutions, as well as be permitted on government buildings and propoerty. YES OR NO
Ballot Proposition #5: Sonograms-The Texas Legislature should enact legislation requiring a sonogram to be performed and shown to each mother about to undergo a medically unnecessary, elective abortion. YES OR NO

Sounds like you were fed some misinformation...

Probably is a local issue

In MI property taxes are a muddled up mess but it is controlled locally

Some states have no property tax if I am not mistaken.

No many though I imagine

If anybody wants to see a system designed by idiots and voted for by even bigger idiots just look at what MI did years ago

You pay the same amount of property taxes on a $400k house in Mn, that you pay in Texas for a $150k house.

Thanks. Do you have a link? Normally I absentee vote, but we'll probably do it face to face this time.

Just for comparison data, do you know what your property tax rate is?

If I combine County ($688.29), School ($3.043.24) and Municipality ($16.79) taxes together I pay $3,748.32/yr
My tax rate is 55.8 Mills or just over 5.58%

So what rates do you guys pay? Just curious what the Mill rates are in other parts of the US

What is the value of the property?

In Minnesota my house valued at $450k was $4200 per year. Now there are other parts of the Twin Cities area where the same house could have property taxes as high as $7000 especially if you are sitting on a lake. In Houston, the property taxes on my $145k house are $4000 per year. One consideration is that the State of Minnesota also has a State Income Tax which ranges approximately from 6-10% depending on income.

Question- Is there a better way to fund schools? If you are an adult with property and your kid(s) graduated long ago, is there a good reason you should be funding school for families that have kids, maybe many kids that only pay a fraction of what you do for taxes? I've always thought you should pay taxes partially based on the burden you are putting onto the school system. If you want to have 10 kids, then you should be paying a relative tax for the privilege...

Property tax is not state. I'm looking at my bill, and it goes to:

  • Flood Fund
  • Alamo Community College
  • Hospital District
  • Bexar County
  • San Antonio River Authority
  • City of San Antonio
  • Northside ISD
I'm looking all over my sample ballot and I don't see anything for a state proposition, only local stuff.
