According to a recent Better Business Bureau report, nearly 9 million people across the county have become victims of identity theft. Since thieves get away with 56 billion dollars a year, insurance companies typically associated with auto or homeowner insurance are now offering id theft policies.
Each year identity theft victimizes millions of Americans. Advocate groups say on average, victims spend more than 175 hours and thousands of dollars in out of pocket expenses to clear their names.
“As everything is computerized everything and all your information is out there for anybody to retrieve,” says Mendy Knott.
If you didn't know, id theft is when a criminal steals your bank account, credit card, social security numbers or any other personal information to fraudulently become you on paper. Now Nationwide and other insurance companies are offering policies in the case you have your ID stolen. “It's a great idea and it's a great value,” says David Hoffmans with Nationwide Insurance.
