I pull into my parking space in the underground carpark, grabbed my handbag, and hopped out of my car. Needing to to get my briefcase, and some files, I put the strap of my handbag over my shoulder, and then pushed my bag around to my back while I leaned back into my car to get the briefcase, and files. Next thing I know I feel this big wretch as someone tugs really hard on my handbag trying to abscond with the vessel that holds some of my most essential items for existence (credit cards, hairbrush, lipstick, voodoo doll of my boss)...luckily I was wearing 3 inch heels, and kicked backwards out of pure instinct, and then I swung around with my briefcase hitting the perpetrator in his bread basket knocking him to the ground, catching my first glance of the offender. There sprawled on the ground was a man who had to be at least 70!! WTH?! I was so astonished to see the age of the person who tried to make off with my handbag that I started to offer my hand to help him up...a gesture that came to a grinding halt when after calling me every foul name under the sun he started dissing my heels-- at 5'4" I'm vertically challenged, so no one disses my heels...
Seriously though, when I had a chance to sit down after speaking to the police, and my boss, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry, be mad at myself for the assistance I was about to extend to a bag snatcher, or pleased that my upbringing saw my first response upon seeing an older person in need of assistance (so-to-speak) was to offer some, or to shake my head in bewilderment at what circumstance would lead an aged pensioner to attempt to rob someone.
I'm still shaken by the whole thing, but wow...just wow...what is the world coming to?
