I fucking hate new haven.
There are three major arterials that get you from the south side to the north side, downtown is on the north side just over the tracks that go right through the center of town right.
Well my office is right downtown. new haven is going through a lot of "downtown revitalization", and what comes with that is new water pipes, repaved roads and lots of construction work.
Both Broadway and Green Street north of Summit Street are both closed, meaning the only way downtown is from the west and from Green Street turning onto Summit street.
Ok, so now that I'm done with the background information... on to why I was freaking out...
I got off work a little bit late tonight, so I jump in my car and head down Summit Street towards the highway. I get up to the light at Summit and Green, and traffic is backed up as usual. I see on the street a car and then an 18 wheeler. I didn't see a turn signal from the truck, so I pull all the way up to the white line.
My light turns yellow, and then red... meaning they now have the right of way.
I start to get a bit nervous as I see the trucks turn signal suddenly turn on, meaning he's going to come my way.
Meanwhile a white sunfire pulls up RIGHT BEHIND ME. Knowing I'm going to have to back up I look in my rearview and mouth the words really slowly "BACK UP". Nothing from the sunfire... so I pop it in reverse... still nothing.
... and here comes the truck... starts out wide... making a really nice turn not hitting ANY curbs, which is hard to do even in a Windstar minivan on these tight 100 year old design roads.
The truck keeps coming closer and closer... and I'm thinking oh shit oh shit...
Finally the trailer of the truck is within a foot of my car, and with my windows down I finally yell STOP as loud as I can. The truck flat out stops.
I could have litterally reached out of my window and touched the bottom of the damn trailer... it was within INCHES of my windshield, with my hood actually UNDERNEATH the damn thing.
In all my panic I look back and yelled "BACK UP BITCH" to the car behind me, and she finally moves back enough so that I can fucking get out of the way.
The truck completes his turn in just enough time for the light to turn yellow on his side, meaning it's my turn.
I tag the gas, swerve around the rest of the oncoming trailer and get the fuck out of there.
I really, really hate new haven.
You can't get anywhere downtown now... all because the mayor feels that downtown needs to be revitalized with more trees and larger sidewalks and more parks no one will use.
