I moved this weekend into a new apartment (pictures to come this weekend). Anyway, Comcast is going to be here Friday afternoon while I'm at work, meaning I don't have any internet right now.

However, unsecured wireless linksys routers own.

Hell, I could get into peoples routers and LOCK THEM OUT. (If they don't know about the holding reset button trick). bwhahahaha

I'm stealing bandwidth right now... but it's so weak it's driving me insane. Once I get my cable and my linksys up and running i'll have full signal and be on more... and it'll definitely be locked out to everyone other than me and my roommate. :D

bwuahahahahahhahahahahahaha

there is a procedure ( dont ask me. i dont have a wireless router :D for obvious reasons ) that you can tell the router to only accept your computer(s) and the internet connection. then no one else can thief your bandwith. though, it might require additional software. im not sure. which may or may not be free. :dunno

All you have to do is get into the router admin and setup a WEP with a password "key". Then only you know the key, and it'll ask you for it when you connect to the router.

you know they actually charged someone with theft for stealing broadband off of a wireless network. Not saying they are gonna bust you or anything, but they do have legal precedent now.

um, yeah, theres a precedent for stealing bandwith. your using a service someone else paid for, and without the payer's consent. simple stealing of services. no biggie - until you get caught that is :D

As far as I'm concerned, if it's there and the end user with the router doesn't lock it out. It's fair game... besides that, some guy living in a 500 dollar apartment building isn't going to have the resources to take me to court over the 1.0 mbps I'm barely receiving anyway.

That's why my router will be locked out.

That's like saying its walmarts fault if someone steals something because they didn't lock/bolt down all their products. But hey, i'm not judging you, i've done it before too.

No that's not the same thing. Walmart would actually lose money if someone stole a product. The person is going to pay the same 50 a month whether I use his signal or not.

He's not losing a damn thing, and it's not my problem he didn't lock it down. :banana

Yeah? You do realize the ISP gets the money either way...?

Besides, comcast will be here Friday so they can begin ass raping me for internet usage.

Besides all that, they can't trace it back to me anyway. All the router will show is that 192.168.1.10/101 connected to it.

my point is comcast is losing $50 a month if you just steal bandwitdth off the guy who lives next door. So no, they don't get their money either way. Like i said, i couldn't give a rats ass about it, but try to look at it as if someone were stealing something from you.

your mac address is on that router as well....and that mac address is specific to your computer...

but speaking of wireless....i tried updating my drivers to my wireless card on my laptop, but now i keep getting an error that i need to update to my drivers to vrsn 9.0.3.x or 9.0.2.x

i thought i updated the drivers but apparently i d/l'ed intel's wirless connection manager for my specific wireless nic (Intel PRO/wireless 2200bg chipset). I tried going back to intel's site to d/l the drivers but it's so damn confusing i kept getting lost....can anybody else find it?

They're not losing 50 a month. It's just like I walked over to my neighbor and stuck my laptop right in front of it. Now if comcast set it up so only a certain amount of computers could get onto their net through one apartment, and I somehow was able to hack my way into this guys router to allow myself onto it, I could see your point. But in the end, Comcast couldn't do a damn thing to me because their customer hasn't secured his router.

I can't go on like this though. Like I said, comcast will be here to assrape me shortly.

make sure its right...

mac addy thing: yes. but with router's, you can spoof - replicate - mac addresses. which can be good and bad. but you are right, the individual connection to the wireless router that si is toying with does have its unique idendifying code. but i dont think si really has to worry. as long as he changes his cards every so often :D
