Its Human Nature to Argue against something you don't believe in

I have noticed in all of these Debate threads, at least one person gets the shits has a hissy fit and has to end up apologizing for their reactions.

Is it Debate in general that gets people worked up or is it being told you are wrong and having to fight to get your point across?

That's a good question, I think people tend to get upset when it seems like the person they're debating with doesn't get their point or fails to acknowledge it in any way. It can be hard to hold on to your temper when you've gone to the trouble of thinking out your post, only to have it ignored, or even worse, belittled by someone.

I think it's a little from A, and a little from B. People in general don't like to be told they're wrong, and sometimes we (people) get a little too worked up emotionally to keep their head in the game.

Everybody believes they are great communicators, and if somebody doesn't acknowledge their message as intended, it can strike them as a personal affront which requires a personal response. Most people don't understand that excellent communication is not exclusively the transmission of a great idea, but the successful transmission and receipt of the intended message.

Take LiberalVichy for example. Probably one of the most eloquent writers the site has ever seen. Her grasp of her own thoughts, and her overwhelming grasp (usually) of the English language would normally make for a great communicator. But in that case, the opposite was true. Because so few people could understand her, the communication was a total failure.

I think if people would realize that, and work toward a 'common language' in debate, there would be a lot less feelings hurt, and a lot less tempers flared.

Scott I advise against that, unless you're wearing a raincoat. Ah screw it, nothing is worth doing unless you're willing to get dirty.

People have emotional attachments to their views which are bound up from cultural/tribal appeal. They also often haven't though their ideas through, which means they do not want to admit ignorance for fear of feeling stupid. Unfortunately, to avoid looking stupid they actually become stupid.

......and true.^^^

And then again, some people just like to argue.

I have leaned a lot from here. Because of my aspergers syndrome I have a lot of trouble seeing others point of view, through here though, I have seen intelligent views which though I disagree with, I can see more where the're coming from. I think I have seen more clearly who is talking shit and who I just disagree with. I rarely agree with Donnie and Intruder for instance but they back themselves up with evidence for instance where as some people on my side can talk shit despite me agreeing with them .
