To start off, my laptop internal wireless NIC doesn't work, and my hardwired NIC barely works.

I had a job today that I needed my laptop for, so I ran home to get it and had to plug in some static IP addresses because I was working off a T1 connection.

I get home and my external wireless USB card doesn't want to connect. wtf?

So I plug it into another USB port. It comes up and gives me limited connectivity. So I'm rummaging around all over my networking properties and it randomly just fucking starts working.

I hate this shit. I hate it. I just want to punch computers in their monitors.

Which OS? I find this same BS in XP and its worse in Vista. Yuk. Plug-n-play, yeah right. How about getting the shit to work right thats in the damn machine itself!

It's on XP on my Dell laptop. I have two Dells and they've both had various problems of their own. I like how Dell gives you a one month warranty, and then after a year the wireless card stops working.

What do you think about Gateways? I'd like a new laptop for work so I can just leave this one at home.

I'm also planning on building a badass desktop so once I get my big screen I can run it off the computer.

Its hit or miss with Gateways for me. I still have a Gateway something running so I guess it can't be all that bad.

I built up a nice desktop for this same application. Even put it in a case that looks like a theater component. I run a projector off of it, pretty sweet. I bought an expensive sound card(at the time) too, m-audio. I need to revamp the video card as this was a couple years ago and better stuff has come out. :D

I tell you what, I LOVE my Lenovo T60. The IBM Thinkpad has been very good to me. With all the problems I have seen with networking on laptops, I'm surprised that this thing hasn't given me 1 problem at all...

I would agree, IBM makes a mean laptop, they just charge too damn much for them! Its like an Apple.

Whats some recommended components? My brother is doing this currently on his 55"... makes me sort of jealous that I'm stuck with my damn 20" until I can figure out away to pay for a nice sized TV.

Edit for Tim: How long have you had your IBM? I've heard lots of good things about Thinkpads.

I've had this one for about 6 months or so. I got it brand new in the box for $600. or about half of the fair market value.

Well your going to want to have a video card that can handle all the standard inputs/outputs (which most do). It mostly comes down to preference. I like ATI stuff for the most part. I like my M-Audio soundcard. The key is to have a great Audio tuner/amp really.

I run mine with a 2.4GHz with 2 gig of RAM. Again, this was a few years ago and I have no problems running with this setup. Of course you'll want a decent DVD burner and the software to *cough, *cough burn movies from Netflix or you could just buy a huge HD and play them right from there. Thats what I do. I am about to write a simple app where I can search my library and just choose and click play.

And do what? Edit pics and video? No thanks. They screwed the pooch a long time ago, now they get to pay the price and appeal to the nerds of the world.

Still...the most reliable computer/OS on the market...Networks in a snap...user friendly...and no worries bout viruses and the like. :D

All depends on whether you prefer the drive a BMW or a Hyundai.

Dell's are some of the best built systems around for their price.... now if price isn't an issue, go with a Sony,Toshiba, or IBM... if money IS an issue, Dell is #1, then HP and then Compaq.... Gateway sucks, and so do all the other no-names.... Dell, HP, and Compaq(now that HP owns them) all put decent brand name components in their PCs, sometimes HP and Compaq slip up and put cheap brands in theirs, but Dells are always good brands.....

No viruses because so few of people use them to make it worth a hacker's time. Trust me, if we all went Linux or Mac, there would be Viruses. Everything can be hacked. MS just feels the brunt because EVERYONE uses one on a daily basis. More fun to the sickos to infect millions of users. I like MS, they pay my bills.
