20% for good service, 10-15 for below average. I don't usually take the quality of the food out on the server, unless it's something they should have spotted before bringing it to my table. For example, if I order onion rings with my sandwich and I get french fries, the server should have checked the order against the ticket and spotted it.

If the service stinks, I leave about 5%. Not tipping is not nearly as effective in getting their attention as half a tip, as I've been told by people who work in food service. I can appreciate a server who has been on his or her feet for several hours before I get there and still can smile and be pleasant and does a good job serving me. The girls at the local truckstop are wives, moms, etc and many of them have had rough lives, so they deserve a little sunshine during their day. I don't demand anything, I always try to ask politely and give the benefit of the doubt. If a server is out of sorts, I'll give him or her a pass the first time. We all have lousy days, right? If they're always that way, I avoid sitting in their area if at all possible.

On average 10 to 15%.. When I was young and worked as a busboy in restaurant most of waitresses always kept all the money for themselves. There was only one or two that would share some of their Tip Money and would rag on the others for not doing so. I always thought, you bitches as we worked just as hard as them to help get them that money. They are lucky I hold no grudges but of course they are probably dead by now.. :tooth

Really? My dad is pretty well off, and if a waiter/waitress is smart enough to shmooze him and laugh at his jokes, they'll walk away with a 30-40% tip... hell, I've seen him tip 50% before when a cute waitress joked & flirted back :p

Then he would be one of the exceptions to the rule. :thumbup

I havent been to an honest to goodness sit down diner place in ages but if the bill is $20 or less we leave $5, we pretty much leave $5 in most cases tbh, and if its GREAT service we've left up to $10 that being said we are cheap and rarely have a bill over $25

It totally depends.

Restaurant? typically 20% rounded up.

Bar that I know the bartender well? 30% +

Hooters? 30-40%

Strip Club? How much cash do I have in my pocket?

If I had no money for a tip but the service was good, I tip more the next time I go (but only if I get the same waitress/waiter).

Awww man. I <3 you, Abcinthia, but I don't go out to eat if I can't afford to leave a tip.

20-25%... if the bill is cheaper, than usually more. Like if I go somewhere after work and get 2 drinks and it's $10, I'll leave $15-$20. I made my living off bartending for 5 years and I loved my good tippers, and gave them free drinks/more drinkes/drink specials, plus just got to know them as people (many came to my wedding, baby shower, etc). I often sit at the bar for this reason when I go to restaurants too, I just appericate and understand the service.

THAT is how it's done, ladies and gentlemen. I tip, on average, 20 - 25%. A couple of weekends ago I took my family to eat at The Vortex. Our waitress was fantastic. Bill was $75...I tipped her $20 in cash. If the service is average, I'll tip less. There have been TWO TIMES in my entire life that I've stiffed a waitress. If I'm at a sit down restaurant (both of these were) and have to get up and get my own silverware and refill my own drinks, we've got a problem. I also had a waitress just last year assume that the change left over was her tip, instead of bringing me back my change like I needed. She cheated herself out of a couple of dollars by doing so.
