Sometimes I'm sat there happily reading a book and I come across a particular word I plain don't know the meaning of. Now sure you can say well move on, forget it, but I can't. I have to know what a word means, be it looking it up on the Internet to find out or asking someone, I find out. But anyway I find that somewhat impacts on my ability to read or at least take in what I'm reading. I mean I can read really well,. I read Crime and Punishment in nursery for example, and have always loved to read. It's just....yeah those moments when this happens.

So anyway how well can you read and do you ever have moments?

I can usually figure it out by the context. Then again, I also had a college senior's reading level in the 9th grade :D

I can read very well, and I love those moments you described, I love to expand my vocabulary.

The only times I get those moments is when I'm reading on this forum due to the amount of people on here who talk in American.

Can I ask what book you're reading? ... And yes I tend to get those moments too... I tend to guess as what would fit in the sentence and then look it up after.

At the moment, Last Night In Twisted River by John Irving. Haven't had the problem with this book though, just meant in general terms.

I consider myself a pretty good reader, If I come across a word I don't know the meaning of, I just look it up....it's not like it happens all the time, at least not enough to ruin a book for me.

I occasionally find a word I am unsure of, generally I look it up, or just use context to figure out a meaning that I find suitable!

I think it's impossible to never run into words/phrases that one has never heard before!

I started reading full books at the age of 4 and have a good grasp at the English language (don't laugh...hey, stop laughing!!!) but, of course, there are times where I stumble upon a word that I don't recognize and have to go look it up. What REALLY bugs me is when I look it up and then, out of nowhere, I hear that word 20 times throughout the rest of my day. Like "cake pops"...I had no frigging clue. I had to google it after 3 of my Facebook friends and 2 co-workers mentioned them in the same damn day, LOL

I normally guess by context or ask Zorak.

Usually I only really get into difficulty when I'm reading History books and they use a lot of Latin/Old French but that's just because I am not fluent in those languages. Normally the author will kindly translate it or give you the general gist of the passage in their analysis.
Or books that are written phonetically in an accent. The Color Purple drove me insane because of the way words were written phonetically, though I can understand why the author wrote it in that manner. Some passages I had to read aloud in my best South American accent to understand.
